Like all animals, they are an important part of the food chain. They kill and feed on rodents, insects, amphibians, small mammals, and other reptiles, which would otherwise become overpopulated and a nuisance. Image in there were no snakes to eat all the wild rats and mice. Rats and mice, which carry disease, would be an even bigger problem to us humans than they already are. Snakes are also a food source for birds and larger mammals like raccoons, fox, bear, wild cats, and even humans (in some places). We allow a large wild non-poisonous king snake to live in our garden, as he keeps the other poisonous snakes away and feeds on the rodents and small mammals which would otherwise eat our crops.
