To help the environment, should car manufacturers stop making cars for 5 years?

Look at all the new & used cars on the lots of car dealers in America. Just let people who want a different car, buy one that's sitting on the lots. Outlaw gas guzzlers. School busses smoke like a chimney. Mexicans who do yard work, collect junk, etc. to make a living, drive some trucks that smoke yet they don't get a ticket. 18-wheelers even blow smoke from their vertical tail pipe stacks. Many other problems, think anything will ever be done about vehicle pollution?

Answer:
Your many ideas are LOGICAL.
Bad news is humanity has an economically based system of supporting all the various fields: agro, manufacture, support - that to take away the gas/diesel engine would collapse the whole worlds system and no one will do this.
On smaller scales, like Island nations, like Fiji, Samoa, possibly larger like New Zealand your idea could be possible - but great courage at such a scale would be amazing - the sacrifice of profit stops me from thinking this could happen. Well Brazil has changed to ethanol from sugar cane - and lowered dramatically their oil import - but they still use gas/diesel.
Humanity needs a totally new power supply to make the gas/diesel unpopular to the people that make money. If it costs more (like double) to have gas/diesel or use the new technology - the people with money will go with the new technology as it costs so much less. Then they make more money and the pollution goes down, and humanity is not stuck using only gas/diesel. A win-win eons from now, sadly.
Well as I write this - it's with my pessimistic attitude. Of course if humanity took a courageous and radical step - ANYTHING is possible. That's how humans got to the moon - radical thinking and courage. I guess if your over 40 you see little change for the future. If your under 30 no one has forced you into a rut, and anything in the future looks possible.
Keeping politicians and law enforcement honest - and stopping poluting cars and trucks is what is supposed to happen today. Smog checks and 1-800 numbers to report exhaust law breakers is tough because people have to be involoved 24/7 and many do not want to deal with mad, angry people (Dangerous too) over exhaust smoke.
good idea, better one is to stop making humans for 5 years.
We don't have to take extreme measures like that.

The economic fallout from doing what you say would be devastating. Not only would automobile workers lose their jobs, but everyone who serves their needs would be hurt. We would immediately fall into an economic Depression. Poverty is a bad environment, too. It has been shown that it kills people.

A proposed law will up the required gas mileage of cars from 27.5 to 35, and include SUVs and pickup trucks.

That's the sort of very reasonable and affordable stuff that will address our problems without great damage to our lifestyle..
if they can it will be a gr8 solution to global warming & ozone deplition
no
I think they should retire vehicles that are 20 years or older, unless they are retrofited to emit less pollution.

Anyone caught driving some STINKmobile...you know the types, can't afford a car and can't afford to fix it either, so you suck up the muffler smoke in traffic...should get a heavy fine..in fact you should be able to report nasty vehicles like that to some number where they can follow up.

And lawnmowers, they are even worse than automobiles and you wouldn't believe the pollution one hours worth of running causes (something equivalent to running your car for 24 hours or more).

So I think the car manufacturers should focus on making energy efficient non polluting vehicles if they want to survive. Other vehicles should slowly be retired, but any vehicle which doesn't meet certain criteria should be taken off the road...not this nonsense of making chemicals you add to your vehicle hours before getting it inspected. That should be a crime and is as far as I'm concerned.
Demand the Gov't legalize Hemp. Ethenol- Hemp grows faster than corn and can also be used for food clothing many many things. Henry ford actually made a car made from hemp- check out henry fords hemp motor.com
Yes they could stop manufacturing vehicles for five yrs. but what would the employees of these factories do in the time being? If they DID stop for 5yrs., it would give them time to design the motors to be ethenol friendly and change the pumps around, so that is something to think about. MAYBE someone needs to get into Henry's archives and find the plans, I know he must have kept records of his designs.
I have to side with John S. it would be better to stop making humans for 5 years, or more.
Have you ever heard the term "Throw the Baby Out With the Bath Water" or perhaps "Kill the Goose That Laid the Golden Egg? If cars and trucks were substituted for babies in the former or golden eggs in the latter, it seems you are looking at symptoms and advocating solutions that are worse than the problems.

Look around you. Virtually everything you have--food, building materials, furniture, appliances, computers, clothes--all were delivered by a truck. Virtually everyone in the country gets to school, work, and play in an automobile. These have been GREAT inventions to solve the problem of mobility and transportation of goods and services.

Believe it or not, air pollution is getting better on a national scale. Pollution control standards, for cars and stationary sources, are in place and need to be inforced.

Of course we have air pollution problems in this country, many associated with automobiles, but that means solving the problems directly and specifically, not banning the existence of vehicles that have such intrinsic widespread useful and beneficial purposes.

Yes, those smoking busses and trucks are really nasty. Report the problems to the schools, bus companies, truck companies, and your regional air pollution control district. Learn who the leaders are at the respective businesses and how to voice your opinion in a constructive manner.

We've made great progress. We need improvement. We need continued concern and vigilance on the part of the citizenry. That means you can and should contribute. Thanks for showing interest.
So, you're solution is to only allow the affluent the luxury of driving; that those who use motor vehicles to earn a living should be banned from doing so for five years. Very brilliant. Why not just euthanize humans with an IQ lower than 120? Unemployment would no longer be a problem. Resources would become cheaper as demand lessens. And as resources become cheaper, so would manufactured products. Sounds like a good idea for everyone but you.
No.
