Would building fresh water lakes solve global warming flooding?
Answer:
I think that would be a very good temporary solution, and would also especially help for those populations which are dependent upon glacial run off. The Himalayan and Andes mountain valleys could hold a lot of water, thus making some very vast lakes without too much environmental damage. Why not save as much as that fresh water as possible so it can be used a few more years? The only problem would be predicting droughts and percipitation patterns, but I think your idea is off to a good start!
*SIGH*
nope
Wouldn't you think the more lakes we had would make the problem worse?
The idea is for us to help to keep the ice zones in the world from melting. It is harmful for the polar bears and etc.
No. Where would you dig the hole to make the lakes. And you are talking about a lot of ice. Greenland ice is at least a mile thick. The Antarctic up to 2 miles thick.
If all the year round ice on the planet becomes free water the levels of the ocean would rise about 100 metres or 110 yards. So to dig a lake bed big enough and about 300 feet deep on average you would have to use the same square footage as the Ocean.
Or to put it another way. To build your lake we would have to use all the the present day continents and put about 1000 yards or one kilometer of fresh water on them to build your lake.
It's a great idea to build man-made lakes for dozens of reasons. However, none of the reasons have anything to do with global warming.
This is An excellent Question and I believe it would do tenfold more than any other one thing that can be done. If we had more people like you in the think tanks on GLOBAL WARMING we would begin to see great progress in this area. Please don't give up...james h.
