for something to work on so 'great' a scale (i use the term loosely) i'd define it as a practice, not just a one time activity. it's a practice we need to get out of the practice of doing.

When individuals do something it is an activity, when an entire society believes an activity is necessary and everyone does it, when it becomes "acceptable", then it becomes a practice.
