Why do people all want to live in the new house with the new car?
Answer:
Some people do want to "keep up with the Joneses." Too many. We have certainly gotten away from our roots, from our core values, haven't we?
We didn't raise our children to be materialistic. We didn't embrace the worst of materialistic principles, and we taught them to step up and volunteer and do good for others just because. But our society has embraced materialism to the point where we want just to want, and we aren't taking care of the planet that has so generously provided for our needs.
Basically, I don't think society can see past the end of its nose, that most can't imagine the consequences of a life out of touch with basic principles such as living simply off the land. Few know how to do that anymore.
I try to lead by example, but you can't preach at people or they'll tune you out. I live in an older "fixer upper" and thoroughly enjoy the work involved in keeping up its value while making it our own. New houses tend to come with associations that tell you what you can or can't do, and I don't want to give up my rights and buy into that, so I don't. But we live in a "two income" society now, and not many people have the time or inclination to fix up homes, especially themselves. But the success of places like Home Depot shows a lot of people still do enjoy that.
I don't know that we can change the course, so I just mind my own business unless I see a reason to step up and speak up.
It's the 'American' way, greed, greed, greed. My house is 50 years old, I drive a '92 and chose not to have children.
The pursuit of happiness drives the desire for the new house, car, and big family. Not many realize that that is not the path to happiness, but a surrogate. We continue to have things our way at the expense of the planet. The picturesque dream is something that evolves so quickly with the changing technology, that it is impossible to keep up with, thereby making the desire for a perfect life unachievable except on Hollywood sets.
Landlord giving you crap again?
Bummer.
Maybe you'll have a car someday--OK, maybe not, but at least you have your dreams.
well john, we all don't want to live in the country and off the land. There's nothing nicer than a new home, with clean walls, and a nice neighborhood and people to know. I myself love cars and would have one of each if only I had the money, but I don't, but it does not keep me from understanding the attraction without the condemnation. If someone has the money and they can make the payments that is their business. As for how many kids someone has that again is not your choice. You may remain childless but in all reality, the world will need those children for the future of humanity. Global warming...get a life read what real scientist are saying those that are not on the Gore bandwagon or the government wanna bees funding ..the Sun is growing, it does so every so often, the earth heats up...matter of fact last time it was about 6 degrees above the predicted norm on this heat up...the world will survive...changes will happen but humans will still roam the earth to kill each other. Mankind and countries will just re-adjust. Calm down..lock and load, and hide..my friend. Oh, all of the other planets in our solar system are heating up too.check it out darlin!
Kids like shiny new things.like most people who are honest. I love my new shiny 45.how about you.
not me! 91 Chevy pickup,no kids, simple old house, also I see you have Rambo pic ! I heard theres another Rambo movie comeing out this summer!! if true Cant wait!
I do not, so that shoots the "All" issue! I realize perhaps I am in the minority of several billion to one!
I prefer to fix up my old place. It was well built, heavy insulation, partially earth sheltered, suits me just fine. I like it because in this age of new houses built with cookie cutters, it is definitely very different.
I have an old third-hand car. I like it because it gets very good mileage, most everything that can go wrong has been fixed, and it is very cheap to license. And I, myself, can fix most anything that goes wrong! Do not need to take it in for thousands of dollars in diagnostics and repairs.
I dunno how people can live as I saw last year in the LA area, 640 acres of identical houses, all probably 2 teensy bedrooms, built about 8 feet apart in a fenced enclave, and, believe it or not in that hot climate, all painted totally dark brown everywhere!! Even dark brown shingles. Must be filled with fried families with the recent weather.
And the 10-foot fence all around would keep out any vagrant breezes...no trees in sight, no room really for any!!
But you have two factors, the concentration of jobs in the big cities, and the current fascination with following the fads in food, clothing, music, and cars and homes. If everybody is doing it, it must be right! And the magazines encourage this.
I guess it is finding your very own unique personal identity safe within what everybody else is doing, latest fashions, etc.
I do not believe we will all be dead in 20 years, unless we continue to let the big businesses use "Carbon Credits" to swindle the little nations out of what little they have, rape the jungles for profit, and keep the less developed nations down in their misery, as the companies are now using "Carbon Credits" to do. Stomp out competition very early on; who cares about the little people when you are making billions by stomping them?
And I think that the folks who are successful and can support many children, especially those who are gifted, should be allowed bigger families and supported, so they can exercise their gifts to benefit mankind. And I oppose the supporting of those who are unable to make the grade to have unlimited families at public expense..
I had just the number I knew I could support and raise and educate well. And they are making their marks in the world, each in their own fields, very effectively.
I do not believe in just having as many kids as possible; however, in the nations that are under the boots of the rich companies, mortality rates in children are so high they have to have many births in order to have one who survives to adulthood.
I ams sure given proper homes and food and medical treatment and education you would find family size decreasing. But here, when you get more for every kid that is born on welfare...why not have a huge family running around loose...you get paid. This is how socialism works.
Because we can, its called Drive, a lot of people don't have that, they have excuses instead. Excuses at to why they failed, why they never accomplished anything, and most without children chose to have 2, 3, or more rotten stinking dogs, crapping all over everything and digging holes in the yard, peeing on every bush, As for me, I will enjoy the next 20 years with gusto, knowing that my have it all, have it now, lifestyle is driving some people, maybe you, nuts. Have a nice day, I have some plastic jugs and such I want to take to the landfill, they make such nice fill material.
HARDWORK AND ENJOYMENT OF LIFE ARE DEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER.THERE IS NOTHING GOOD THAN NEW HOME WITH CLEAN WALLS AND NICE NEIGHBOURHOOD.
Because they are nice. If you don't want them, you are free not to have them, but you have no right to tell other people that they cannot or should not. Who died and put you in charge of what other people do?
Some want newer looking houses but don't want to go through the trouble of remodeling. Our neighbors moved to a new house, I think the inside looks alright, but the outside is UGLY, many of the houses in their subdivision look the same and the area is mostly beige and a lot of the houses have garages that are huge. To me it looks like the house was built for their cars and living quarters were an afterthought. I can understand wanting a new car, I had an older one and it was an unreliable gas guzzler.
