What do you think is the most important environmental problem that affects coastal environments?

What do you think is the most important environmental problem that affects coastal environment and their watersheds? Why? How would you solve the problem?

This is not a question for school or anything. Just my own thoughts.

My answer to this question would have to be about the littering that goes into the ocean. As the tide washes ashore, I feel that more and more garbage comes with it. Last week, I managed to find some underwear that washed ashore and I was thoroughly disgusted!
What do you think?

Answer:
um rising waters? its gonna push everything on the shore back.
Liberalism is the problem that overshadows most areas.
I think the people who live on the coasts are pigs (NY, calif).
Well beach erosion is my top thought.
The biggest problem is too much building (homes, condo's etc). being done on the shore line.

Over building causes:

water pollution
beach erosion
higher property insurance rates for everyone
beach access being denied to the general public
loss of fishing access to the general public
sewage overflowing into the ocean from the sewers

Stop the damage to our shorelines and beaches.regulate development now!

PS...Touma...my brother and I used to regularly fish the waters off New York City (in the Atlantic Ocean).and we would see used condoms floating in the waters. The problem was so common that the fisherman's term for these used condoms was "Coney Island Whitefish".

Disgusting but true.

The biggest problem that affects coastel marine environments is dragger fishing. That method kills just about everything in its wake.
Non-native species from ballast tanks on large ships.
i agree with joeybagadoughnuts. he covered almost all except the beach erosion. over populated areas regardless of where they are causes all types of problems to the enviroment as well as to ourselves.
Sewage runnoff. Especially in far southern California where Mexican raw sewage winds up.
oil spills
Mega tsunamis -no solution
Tsunamis-no solution
Global Warming and rising sea levels -no immediate solution
Hurricanes -plant more coconut palms .or other trees to absorb the storms power

The problem directly related to humans is the garbage ,and this must be controlled

It will take a strong government that polices this aspect of Human behavior in a country where so few people care about the Environment

In Holland a heavy fine or even jail sentences await those who litter

Mexico is a disaster

the whole question of Environmental behaviour
has to be re-adressed,but judging by the responses here i doubt that it will be susesful in time in the Americas.

Chief seatle said ,over a hundred years ago, that those who sleep in their own trash will die in it ,I guess people get what they deserve
Too bad that those who are responsible will be included .

the fault lies largely with the culture
Christian countries are notorius for bad behavior with the Environment but they are not the only ones Poor countries lack the education

One word: People. How do you solve it: Stop populating the earth so fast by using birth control more often!
Overall, even though all the other answers mentioned are equally important, beach erosion is the most damaging and having the most drastic affect. States with shorelines are spending millions of dollars a year trying to restore or replace lost sand but are unable to keep up. Part of the loss is due to natural occurrences like hurricanes and such but at least 1/2 is caused by humans constructing hotels, casinos and other excessively high, narrow buildings without proper sea walls or planning. When buildings are designed according to the land layout and appropriate seawalls are added, it is being discovered, the loss of sand is not nearly as drastic. We are losing more than mere feet or yards per year of shoreline.
