What can I do, personally, to help lessen the green house effect?
Answer:
my family and I do the following:
1 ~ We have trees in our house. My home looks like a jungle. My husband and I grow everything from tiny African violets to huge banana palms. We are fortunate to have a little piece of land attached to our house, so there are birches, lilacs, fruit trees.
2 ~ We try not to use paper towels, paper shopping bags, and other paper products that involve in cutting trees to make them. We are shopping with our cloth totes and use cotton kitchen towels that we simply wash after they get dirty.
3 ~ Every Christmas we use an artificial fur tree. It saves a lot of money and a tree.
4 ~ We keep an eye on new construction sights that involve cutting the trees. We ALWAYS try to dig the trees out before they have to be cut and find a new "home" for them. It actually works pretty well and construction workers always help us.
Everything begins within yourself and your family.
You can buy Solar Photovoltaic cells. The cost is offset by the money you save on electricity. It will have a 10 year payback. After that, the energy is free. It will also increase the value of your home by more than $15K (which is the avg cost of a system).
Squeeze tight and hold it in after that big plate of beans.
Here are some points to considder as an Individual,a community and a country.
The best we can do as individuals is be more responsible ,in our own neck of the woods
Organise well publicized clean up parties ,talk on the radio
Have citizan meetings
Get the shools involved to plant trees and listen to environmental awareness talks,
If you do any cleaning up leave signs behind saying who cleaned, why and ask people not to start dumping rubbish again ,leave a hole or bins ,in case people come with trash ,
We have done a lot of comunity cleaning and if you dont leave alternatives or try to work on peoples guilt feelings (some people actually have those ,but not many)
than your efforts are a waste of time.
That is what we do in Mexico
POSITIVE ACTIONS
Print Tshirts with slogans ,hang posters all over the place (with recycled paper if possible)
Classify trash take out all the organic waste and make compost with it ,the worst you can do is throw it with the trash
70% of contamination is due to organic waste that is mixed in with the garbage .
And it is just as bad in the sewer where it helps to breed rats and in the landfill it poisons the ground
And it is the easiest to take care of
o first of all we have to clasify trash at least keep the organic to one side ,like in a plasic bin with a lid
If you got a few meters of ground ,you only need 1 or 2 square meters in a shallow hole ,in the shade ,that you can wet now and again ,where you dump everything that is organic ,from toilet paper, bones vegetable cuttings ,eggshells,,dead bodies ,excrement ,and cover regularly with leaves to keep humid and to hide any smell
the worms will come and decompose the wastes truning it into beautifull blck soil for the garden of flower pots .
If you are in a apartment ,if you have a balcony get a big plastic bin drill some holes in the side and lid ,
Add a few buckets of sand now and again to put over the trash ,you should realt stir or move the stuff at times to airate it and ensure that the decomposition is overall ,keep moist
This rubbish does not get big very fast and the thing works for a long time with out getting full

global warming cannot be stopped but we can stop helping it becoming faster, and being friendlier to out Environment cannot be bad

If you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to slowdown the destructive processes
Reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
The capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
The world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
The protection of existing forrests.
Stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
Education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
Education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´population
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
More environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
More dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
Alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
Recicling wastes,limit water use
Here are a 100 more ways

You can pay me to lessen my carbon footprint and you will do something good for the environment
Start a vegetable garden, plant a tree, ride your bicycle more and use the car less. Install water saving aerators on faucets. Anything you do to reduce your consumption of manufactured goods will result in a smaller "carbon footprint". Switch to lower wattage light bulbs. Watch less TV and instead read a book. Using less from the electric, gas, and water company will also reduce the greenhouse effect. Mow your yard in the evening, fill your gas tank in the evening.

Buy a hybrid, take the bus, ride a bike, walk and stop eating cow.
I went to the NC Museum of Natural Science and saw the film "Kilowatt Ours", it made me see that what I was doing was good, but I could be doing more.
Instead of the five most used bulbs being CFLs I changed all of them! I installed a clothesline in my back yard and now dry all of my clothes with fresh air and sunshine. We made a big purchase of a water and energy efficient washing machine.
I have all of my electronics on power strips so that they can be turned off when not in use.
We recycle just about everything in our house thanks to great recycling in Orange County NC! We compost in our backyard and have planted drought tolerant plants around our house. We grow our own herbs and vegetables in the spring and summer as well.
I am lucky enough to be able to walk to and from work most days.
We are looking to purchase our own house and along with that install all energy-star appliances, a geothermal heat pump and energy efficient windows. Down the road we would love to have solar power as well!
Most of what I have done seems like little things but I have seen the difference it has made in our energy use and the savings. My family was a little hesitant, but they say they are glad we made the changes and look forward to becoming greener in the future.
nothing personally, one person cant make the greenhouse effect alone, so one person cant lessen it all by himself either..
- you can make a water powered car or a vehicles powered off of something other than gasoline that wouldnt pollulte the enviroment that would help alot...
-or have people in your community sign a petition that only allows for them to use the least amount of chemicals that are dangerous to the ozone layer to be used, or to banish those chemicals completely from their daily use...
i hope i helped but i dont think that i did...
Why don't you just go visit that "green" site that Y!Answers is promoting?
Other then that listen to the answers ppl already gave ya ;-)
try to make your own stuff or grow your own stuff or you get the idea...
The easyest and cheapest thing is change all your light bulbs lol and take showers instead of baths ;-) (short showers)
^_^
Ride a bicycle or an electric whatever or a moped or a scooter or something instead of a regular gas vehicle ;-) when travelling within 10 miles or so
