Why do people save for a rainy day?
Answer:
I agree with you, save for a nice sunny day......
Because rain is expensive.sunny days are normally free.
Have you seen the price of a decent umbrella
Me too.. I try not to be too frugal nowadays..
They are probably saving for a holiday!
Well I suppose if whatever you're saving is an indoor activity, then if you performed it on a nice day when the sun is out you'd be wasting that nice day and you should save that activity for when it's raining outside and the indoor activity would be best.
what? you..I...well....what...
its a pun for a depressing, down time
sheesh
LOL its an expression save for a rainy day like a bad day when all else fails and your flat broke lol thats the best way i can describe it
because when it is raining you dont usually want to be outside you want to be at the mall...
rainy days are when you need money, say the IRS is after you, then you need your rainy day fun, it's for unexpected events
'Rainy days' doesn't exactly mean the weather, it means for something that may eventually happen and you have the wherewithall to pay for it.
Because you never know what's round the corner. When unfortunate situations happen(it's a fact of life) it's nice to be prepared for it.
It's so you can fix the roof when the water comes through.
(No - really - that's where the saying comes from!)
It's just a saying. A rainy day figuratively means when things are going wrong. Like you get fired from your job. If you've saved for the rainy day you'll have money to pay rent and buy food till you can find another job. However if you decided to go have fun with your money and enjoy vacations and things without leaving some padding, when something bad happens you won't have the money to get yourself out of it.
So whilst they sit moping watching the rain (as now) they can sit counting their savings
Traditionally its on a rainy day that you discover the roof leaks, and your not going to pay for that out of ready cash unless your Posh and Becks.
because when it rains they usually cannot go out to work
(in the old days )so they need to have something saved to survive during the no working time
It isn't an expression to be taken literally.
Saving for a rainy day means ensuring that you have some capital to fall back on when times are bad.
So, a "rainy day" could mean when you lose your job, when the interest rate rises and the building society could foreclose on your mortgage because you have nothing saved to meet this unexpected expense, when your kids have kicked the toes out of the shoes you expected to last till the end of term and there is another 6 weeks to go, when the your dog gets hit by a car and it is going to cost £3000 in vets bills.
Instead of having to put these things on your credit card bill, and pay someone else interest, you have something put by in a savings account which is paying you interest.
If you live in Lincolnshire you will save for a 'kin Boat..!! ... all it dose is piss down . wish i was back in Sunny Essex.. ( save for a BBQ ). nuff said
It is an old saying meaning save for when something breaks down, or you get an unexpected expense, but here in uk we would have no savings left after the last 3 weeks weather!
what they mean by this is that before a rainy day comes to save up. that way you could shop and be called smart because of your coning idea to save up for a rainy day that way you would not be bored inside of your house and have something to do in stead of singing in the rain
In that phrase the words "rainy day" are figurative rather than literal and represent difficult times, not a day it is raining out.
