Leather vs leatherette?
this is for those used in camera cases, palm cases, filofax covers, document holders, etc
Answer:
If properly cared for leather will be better in terms of durability and longgevity. Leatherette tends to crack and break when folded or bent a lot.
Why? Leatherette is stiffer than leather and has a fixed moisture content which tends to dry out. Thus, it breaks more.
Is it better environmenttaly? I don't know.
You can oil leather to clean and preserve it. I've seen horse riding saddles over 50 years old that are still in good shape because of extra care. Don't think you can do that with the phony stuff.
I have not researched environmental factors, but as long as we are killing animals for food, the leather from the hides may as well be used for something. I would be against any animal being killed just for the hide, though.
There are a lot of chemicals used to make hides into leather, we need to check into the environmental impact of those. I am thinking that they are re-used, but how much and where they are disposed of, that is a good question. And, of course, lots of chemicals are in imitation products, too. I don't know who can answer that. Live well, love deep and do good!
leatherette holds up overall better than leather.
Well i have to say that leather will last longer than the fake stuff. I have had a leather fringe jacket since I was 16 years old. And it still looks like the day I got it.
use the real stuff if you can afford it
With proper cleaning and care, you can't do better than to go leather
