What are some pros and cons to internal combustion energy?
Answer:
Pro:
- old technology which is widespread and relatively inexpensive
- relatively high efficiency (45% achievable)
- different technologies can use a large variety of fuels which have high energy densities (methane, hydrogen, diesel, regular gas kerosene, heavy oil, biodiesel, esther, bioethanol, etc...)
- possible combination to cogenerate (power+heat)
- some new developments (direct injection)
Cons:
- large amounts of pollution: NoX, SoX, CHn, O3, etc...
- heavy (problem for vehicles).
- very limited lifetime (only tens of thousands of hours)
- high need for maintenance (oil, abrasion, friction, etc...)
- lower range of power and flexibility than gas turbines
- noisy
- difficult to start (strong power needed to start)
pros: burning gasoline is an easy way to get energy because it's easily stored and transported.
cons: oil is a limited resource and is starting to run out.
It's also primarily located in the unstable Middle East.
Burning gasoline creates a number of biproducts, including carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas and the primary cause of our current global warming.
Pros: gasoline has an extremely high energy content.
Cons: internal combustion engines haven't changed much in the past 100 years and are very inefficient.
Pros:
1)Easy to transport fuel required.
2)High source of energy.
3)Easily refueled compared to electric cars.
4)Efficient than external combustion engines.
5)Inexpensive compared to gas turbines.
Cons:
1) Harmful emissions (carban monoxides, carbon dioxides, and hydrocarbons), which may pollute the environment.
2) Rapidly depleting source of fuel.
