Is this more good news from the animal kingdom?
This from Reuters:
SYDNEY - Australia’s Great Barrier Reef might be able to survive warming sea temperatures, as a result of global warming, better than first thought because some coral algae are more heat tolerant, Australian scientists said.
Coral geneticists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science have found that many corals store several types of algae, which can improve their capacity to cope with warmer water.
“This work shatters the popular view that only a small percentage of corals have the potential to respond to warmer conditions by shuffling live-in algal partners,” said institute marine scientist Madeleine van Oppen.

Answer:
Jim z: Because the oceans are such a stable eco-system, they hardly change at all, the species in it have evolved much less tolerance to any changes. Compare it to a lake where nutrients, temperature, and Ph varies greatly. The species living under such conditions can tolerate much wider temperature swings then the oceanic ones.
The corals do require (most of them) warm temperatures, but also stable ones.
I thought coral reefs actually require warm waters. I hadn't heard that people were suggesting that GW would harm coral but they don't always let facts get in their way.
It sounds like this coral would be perfect for grinding up and making concrete.
The only animals that like global warming are the mosquitos, especially the ones carrying malaria. Malaria has spread to higher elevations each decade and more deaths are happening more often. All other animals are suffering from global warming.
Thats very good news indeed!
