How do I get rid of flies in the wormery?
We have a wormery at the bottom of our garden to compost kitchen waste, but it is full of little black flies that swarm up when you open the lid.
Its been getting worse recently, and we've been noticing more flies in the house as well.
We think the worms may have died, and are trying to get hold of some new ones. Could this cause the fly invasion?
Answer:
the flies will do no harm to your compost in fact they like all the crawlies will contribute to the process. Laying damp newspaper on the top will help keep them down if they become a real problem. As for the worms dying if the heap is too wet, acid or too dry the worms will either die or evacuate. Try adding more paper to the compost it is like adding fiber to your diet you need it as does your wormery.
if it is saturated with water the worms will die,
a bad sign is mushrooms ,
are you turning the compost for the worms?does the container have a drain that contiuesly drains out black liquid
(this incidently is very rich fertilizer for flower pots )
something is not right
If the flies are big it could be because you are putting meat bi-products in the compost... avoid that completely. No fatty products.
If the flies are small you prolly need more grass/leaves/twigs mixed up with the kitchen waste. The worms will die if it is too wet. too dry, and lemon peel (all citris really) is a dead set no go area. I cover my worm farm with damp hessian bags so it can breathe.
You need to rotate your compost regularly.
