Why do people recycle when it hurts the enviroment even more than not recycling?

And yes, it does it make them feel good to think they are doing good. That works for everybody.
the government has conned use into thinking it is better for the environment to recycle than not too and we have all fallen in to there trap. may be in the long run it will be better but for right now all we are doing is destroying the world faster.
Be specific about the recycling you're talking about.
Glass is recyclable, most plastic costs slightly more energy to recycle, but vastly less material so it's recyclable.
Paper, like newspapers are recyclable.
Recycling, as I have seen it has become a very feel good thing, every time someone recycles especially in the schools, they get a pat on the back and a prize. Remember the order, maybe they should be emphasizing that- reduce, reuse and recycle. Also you need to remember that if you don't buy it (possibly bad for the economy, but there will be no economy in a dead world) you won't have to worry about recycling it.
Because many of us get our science from better sources from Penn and Teller.
