Why doesn't California use solar energy to solve its power crises?

Seriously, there is not a single cloud in the sky in sunny old California, how could someone not think of using solar there?

Answer:
Give the politicans some slack huh.

Solar energy is pretty pathetic as an energy source by itself, try it yourself. Get a torch run on solar power with no batteries and see how much light and power you can get out of it. Sure it works, but compared to batteries... its weak, really weak.

Now while solar energy is all good and nice, it is no where near the point where it could save a city from an energy crisis, no where near enough. I wouldn't leave a huge thriving city in the hands of solar power, that would be almost certain chaos.

Solar power won't have its own feet without subsidies for many many years, that science learning period and experimentation will take a while and in the mean time your area needs power. One day without power would mean complete chaos.

Politicians have brains, and if the solution were soo easy they'd do so, but its not all back and white. Drilling in Alaska is the best option to save the energy crisis, support would be good instead of ignorant, naive attacks.
The same reason Californians recalled their elected sane Governor and voted in a dumba*s actor in his place. They're morons.
I always felt bad for the people from California, they always get ripped off (CARB, 8 billion illlegal mexican's to put through public school on the tax payer's back).

Ignorance and possibly stupidity. But dont just blame them, there are lots of places in this world with ample sunlight most of the year and still havent gone for Solar PV in big scale.
California is the nations leader in solar energy production, solar panel manufacturing, and R&D. They already have policies and tax incentives in place. And its one of the fastest growing industries in the state.
It's the same reason they didn't introduce hybrids till now... even when they had the technology to do so many years ago. It's all about making money and keeping business happy. Why do you think that only Southern California Edison can be your power company in southern cali? its a government giving monopoly.

its also a game of politics. they would rather promote a program that allows people to "pay" to offset what Co2 or whatever they use as their attempt to solve the problem... cause people in California have "money" [heck i don't... i'm a poor college student]

But you have to admit, it would be really awesome if there where solar power sheets on top of every roof of every city hall, police station, etc... that would save a ton of money in the long run and save the planet too... too bad the government won't lead the way.
If you look on google earth you will see solar collectors in the desert. But they are far from cities, so there is extra cost for the transmission lines.

If people like yourself lobby your politicians, there will be a lot more sensible policy.
I'm looking out at the "May Gray" that we get along the coast here. Interior parts of the state may be cloud-free, but here we're often socked in through a fair part of the day in May and June.

But to answer your question: no clue why California doesn't go solar in a big way. Talk to Arnold, maybe he can tell us. As for my family, it's fairly expensive to convert existing structures but we plan to incorporate solar into property we bought for retirement when we start building.
