How do wet scrubbers in air pollution control filter the waste water? What kind of filter do they use?
Answer:
Wet scrubbers are normally used to remove sulpher compounds from the air discharged from power plants burning higher sulpher coal / gas.
They are not actually "filters". The air passes through them and a solution is sprayed across the stream which removes the sulpher compounds from the airstream. The solution is then normally dried out and disposed of with the sulpher in it.
There is another type of wet scrubber that does have filters. The are nothing but large fiberglass tubes (15'x2') that remove bulk particulates and low volatile oil from the air flow. The scrubber water part is then used and that water goes to an industrial wastewater system with no filtering other than what is used in the wastewater system. There are other variations that can be used and they vary by industry. The sulfur scrubber described in the other answer is the most common.
