Now that people are thinking and trying to live "green" what is the best way to dispose of the dead?

Should we still be taking up precious ground space burying the dead in the ground? Has anyone even thought about this issue?
Does it have any effect on people's religious and/or traditional beliefs?

What steps do you think should be taken?

Answer:
I have thought about it but haven't really taken the time to look into it. My gut instincts are cremation, covered but no coffin. Interested to know what others think. Don't want a gravestone either or flowers.

Death rituals are just that, they have many functions, not just to do with grieving. Also to do with expectations and routine. When a situation is difficult it is easiest to follow an expected routine. In some parts of Ireland I understand it is still customary to black over the clocks and mirrors with cloths. These traditions have a function. By trying to be 'green' we may loose this and make a difficult time more uncomfortable than need be. Interested to see your responses.
I like the Viking burial myself or the Tibetan sky burial
I'm thinking wood chipper.

I'm going to go watch Fargo now...
Designated Garden. Our famly church has a memory Garden for creamation. We came from "Dust and to Dust" We shall return when life is breathed from God, just as in the Beginning. Wht better way to honor a Loved one than for them to contribute to the beauty of the earth, plants and flowers alive with color, growing, alive!
The body is not the problem it's going to decay, however, I think they should take away the vault "burial chamber". The vault is concrete so it's not going to dacay with the body. The decay resistant wood coffins and any other coffins that will not break down should also go way. The best way is Cremation, however, a lot of people want to buryed the traditional way. Burying people in the ground is not hurting the earth it's the things we are putting them in that's taking up space.
I want to be cremated, after they remove any parts that may help someone else live or have a better quality of life.

I think ashes should be added to fertilizers, to give back to the earth.

Grave yards help to protect the land from more destructive uses.
You could also be buried in a natural wood "casket". They have actually started doing this. The casket is just a pine (or whatever wood you want) box. Families can have their loved ones buried in the woods or anywhere that's legal. Most families lay a simple carved stone, above where the person was buried, with their name, date of birth, and death on it.

This is just another option besides cremation.
Cremation
well, i think you should burn the dead. thier bodies aren't needed if the go to hevan or hell, only thier souls are the important part. it may effect some religions, but for the most part, it shouldn't effect the religions because of cremation.
PERMACULTURE ANSWER

TO BE BURRIED IN A COFFIN
is a basic sin in Natures terms ,and those who get burried like this do not complete the cycle of life breaking the cycle and breaking the law of return (dust to dust),and so end up doomed and double damned.

And cremation also cheats Nature of what belongs to Nature
the remains should go back in to the system-THE LAW OF RETURN

The best morally correct way is to be buried with out a coffin and plant a tree on top and let the maggots eat you .

If it is a fruit tree we would end up with sacred orchards instead of cement forrests of crosses, with people buried locked in the remains of dead trees.

So that you return to the concept of life something else eats the maggots, the worms make compost the grass and the tree ,grows from this ,

The cow eats the grass the people eat the cow and the fruits and the cycle of life continues and your spirit is secure to wander the happy hunting grounds for ever and ever in blissfull peace

As long as the death is registerd with the local council ,this is legal all over the world .

cremation increases co2 emissions.
sea burial pollutes the sea.
sky "burial"feeding to the vultures increases their population.
out to space burial needs propulsion fuels and co2 emissions.
ground burial uses spaces.but those that were buried with cloth wrappings only, when decayed, reuse that space again.
when spaces would be that costly, maybe one day, a tall skyscraper for the dead be made.
