Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.
It's been happening for millions of years.
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

haha, seriously though; its a wake up call. the earths temperature is increasing and we need to figure out why and how to fix it before it's too late.
Global warming means that the average temperature across planet is increasing.
The vast majority of scientists agree that this is so. Somewhat less, though still the majority believe that this is caused by humanity - in particular, the release of large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, which reduces the amount of heat that would ordiniarily radiate into space.
However, what it means and why it is happening are two different issues. "Global warming" means "Average temperature across planet increasing" - not why, not how.
By the way, just as there are fewer scientists that believe it is due to humanity than that it is happening, there are fewer still that agree that it is a bad thing and fewer still agree what to do about it.
However, the majority - yeah, I would still even classify it as the "vast majority" - believe that we SHOULD cut down on carbon emissions and start coming up with ways of reabsorbing the CO2 that's there (e.g. planting trees).
It means when the temperature of the Earth warms up
Like it has done countless times in the past. It also has been known to cool down on occasions too! ALL without the help of Carbon emmissions
It means we want you consumers to buy hybrid vehicles and cf lightbulbs. It means that AlGore is getting rich off of "global warming." It means putting on a global concert that did more harm to the earth than good.

The guys who tell you that it not happening and its all a natural cycle are the same type of people who had Galileo locked up for suggesting the earth was going round the sun instead of the other way round.
Ask them what evidence that have that the current warming cycle is cause by natural events and they will have none. The linkage between human co2 production and increasing temperatures on the other hand has been well researched and documented.
But there you go some people are not going to accept it because it may inconvenience they and they may have to get off their fat back sides and do some exercise to get places or buy a smaller car.

The Earth warms and cools naturally as there is no such thing as a static climate.
It was about 10 deg warmer 1000 years ago during the Medieval Warming Period than it is today. So any warmth we have today is just a part of natural cycles.
Earth has a very thin layer of atmosphere around it. So, when Sun rays hit the earth and reflect from the Earth's surface, the thin layer of atmosphere is normally not trapping it. So, most of the heat escapes from the earth's atmosphere.
However, today, due to smog and pollution (caused by mankind), these man made gasses are released to the atmosphere. These gases are so thick, that they prevent all the heat (from the sun rays reflected from earth's surface) from escaping the earth's atmosphere. This causes the temperature of our atmosphere to rise.
This effect is called Global Warming. We can see a lot of evidences of this today. Google it and you can find many many evidences of global warming.

A lot of emviermentalists like to say it is the cause of polution from factories, cars, buses, and airasal can use.
But in acuality it is just a natural life cycel, like for instence about every 10,000 years there is an iceage, not always real bad but it is still concidered an iceage.
Global warming is the natural way for our planet earth to go through one of its warming trends, then shortly after words there will be another iceage, after all we are about due for another one.
But don't get to worried about it cause this can take over several hundred years to do so.
If you've watched the news you would here how the north polar capes are melting very fast, well this in turn causes the sea levels to rise, witch in turn will cause more sever storms to come about, this is all happening while our temps continue to rise over the years.
Then the temps will start to drop very fast,by about 10'F every year, till we have the next iceage.
In other words it is a way for mother earth to heal herself from all the popalution, and allow time for the cleansing process.

Global warming is an overall increase in the world's temperature due to a change in the composition of our atmosphere.
Why is it changing? Our cars, industrial methods, and even some of our agricultural practices result in more CO2 as well as other gasses (such as methane) in the air. The problem is that, like a few people mentioned above, these gasses trap heat from the sun very efficiently and thus warm the air and the earth.
It's not a controversial idea at all: even my 3rd grade science textbook (I'm in my 20's now) confirms that CO2 acts like the earth's "warm blanket" by trapping heat from the sun, and the planet would be a lot colder without it. The problem is that now, our "warm blanket" is getting too thick!
Anyway, over the last 20 years, thousands upon thousands of scientists have worked with the United Nations to determine exactly how much warming has happened and why. As of April 2007, they are at the highest level of scientific certainty that:
a) the earth has warmed at least 1.1 degrees in the last 100 years (doesn't sound like a lot, but the avg temp of the earth during the last ICE AGE was only 3-9 degrees colder than now!)
b) this warming is caused by all the CO2 and other greenhouse gasses that human activity has produced.

It's the rise in Earths temperature mostly due to all the HOT AIR coming from Al Gores mouth and other greenies like him, flappin their lips about something they can't possibly know.
The avg temp of the earth is rising causing the ice caps to melt.
We being meat eaters, should start eating more fruits & vegetables like we are meant to.
The one single reason is cattle and the dung they produce, before you laugh and disregard this answer, it is a scientific fact, are the main source of the substance, CO2? that help to cause Global warming.
Stop sending airships into space, find alternative fuel for motor vehicles and commercial Aircrafts.
Recycle much more than we do now.
