Many have claimed to hear it but not even with sensitive radio-electric microphones can the sound be picked up.

Although since people have heard shooting stars(that don't land) it makes it completely possible.
Probabaly yes.
On the occasions that I have been far enogh north to see them, I have never been able to hear them.

I would be willing to bet they emit radiowaves though.

If you could tune a receiver to the correct frequency you would hear the sound from the radiowaves. I suspect that it would probably just sound like static though.
