What was the purpose of Live Earth?

The point was to get publicity for Al Gore for his race for the presidency of The United States, and make some money of the side.
Stopping Global Warming had nothing to do with it.

Honestly it never had clear goals. Al Gore just got his name back in all the headlines and I think that was its real goal.
To resolve the angelic conflict !

That was the ostensible purpose. Maybe it helped. But with all the urgings for people to use their cell phones to "text in your pledge" to help reduce GW, I had to wonder why they seemed so focussed on gadgets and gizmos and nonessential foofaraws. A call for simplicity would have been much more to the point. The laudible aspect of the concert was that it was held in so many different locations, enabling people to participate without so much lengthy, energy-consuming travel.
I know I'm going to get lambasted for this but...

I don't buy into the global warming argument much. That said, do I think recycling and cutting carbon emissions are a waste of time? Absolutely not! However, the science on both sides of the argument tends to be very self serving and very dramatic.
Expample #1: WE ARE KILLING THE PLANET! No, we're not, we're killing oursevles. The planet will survice us.
Example #2: Emissions from coal burning power plants do not have a large effect on the environment and keeps power cheap. Tell that to all the people with respitory maladies, which have increased over the last 50yrs, how much does that cost?
Global Warming is a polarizing issue being used by politicians and special interest groups. And division begits failure on all fronts.

The proceeds are sent to http://www.climateprotect.org and the amount will be announced this week. Although the concert used a lot of energy, they purchased carbon offsets to keep it green. To allow the mafia style recording companies another opportunity to rip off consumers with another already easy to produce disc set offered as an over-priced way to support the environment while destroying it at the same time with all of the chemicals in the electronics, the way the media will be produced, them driving around in their Benzes, etc ...
