What could you do to get people in your neighborhood excited about recycling?

Answer:
Probably nothing. Let's face it, recycling is a great idea and environmentally important, but there's nothing even remotely exciting about it.
Show to them that recycling help in our SOCIETY..
Make it a fun community activity. Set up a special event where there is food and fun and recycling all in one. Kids can participate in decorating and labelling special bins for recycling. And everyone can participate by bringing stuff from their home to kickstart the recyclables collection. Just a few thoughts off the top of my head. Get the media involved too, that will certainly be exciting for some people. And it will also help to promote recycling and encourage others to start their own neighbourhood programs.
Nothing, my state(California) is doing everything possible to be #1 in ecology, but the cities themselves are looking the other way. The ecology is everyone's responsability, but do they care, I don't think so, I heard many excuses: it's useless, I don't have time, why should I do it, for the municipality is cashing in, etc.
prizes
pep rally
telling them all the things you can help
doing the chain reaction (a demonstration. Jasmyn telss Stephanie and Bianca and Melia to recycle, Stephanie tells Lily Nicha Micael and Tasha, Bianca Tells Taylor Bertha Alex and Vicky, Melia tells Jenny Joe Nancy and Kristen, etc and they all tell 4 people till thee whole people u can get for the demonstration is doing it)
tell them about the money you can save (ie. average of $30 a month, thats $360 a year, that is $1080 in 3 years, you can get a laptop, or somethin lyk that)
Introduce them to freecycle groups in your area . People give away their unwanted iems and you can ask for items that you need . So everyone is happy! Find the address on the net . Look up "freecycle groups " or try www.freecycle.org
tell them tat the world will blow up without it
Maybe have some kind of competition and prizes on a weekly or monthly basis.
I think it's useless.

I don't think recycling is what we need to be concerned about. Sure, it doesn't hurt to recycle, but I'm more concerned with air pollution. I think it's ridiculous how in my state (Illinois) you have to test your car every 1 or 2 years, to make sure it doesn't pollute. What about those ******* tractor trailers, and 18-wheelers, next to me on the highway that spew more smoke in the air in one day than my car does an entire year.
i dont know but that is a great question
maybe you could put up a sign or go around the neighborhood and ask if they have any plastic bottles
Well: it is very important that each 1community starts the
Aluminum Can Recycling basicly I do know about yes since
yesterday I'd took some over towards Replanet Center here
in California
do away with all the rules like peeling labels, cleaning bottles and seperation of materials. Also recycling in business has turned into a PC(political correct) non-event. They put the recycle bins all over the office/plant fill them up once and then never empty them so it looks like when people walk by that they are recycling conscience. Lets have another concert that pollutes and wastes energy to promote a green earth; that always seems to work.
Hi,

This is an admirable question, but I think more than making it fun to recycle, you have to make it easy. If it's easy and painless, people will do it. If it's not, if they have to walk 10 feet out of their way, many won't.

In the spirit of your question, though, I would suggest talking to your local elementary schools about recycling programs. Educating children and getting them excited about recycling could really have a positive effect on your community and the environment.

good luck!

Mike
I don't know how to answer the question but I do have a story about recycling. My college had a recycling system when i started school but as the year went by, the blue boxes were filled with trash instead. This past year at Christmas time, some of the students studying Environment protested to return a recycling system to the Dormatories. Now, those students who so choose to participate only have to sign out a small blue box from the office, use it in their rooms and there is a series of containers in the main lobby to empty the smaller boxes. This reduced the number of trash bags going into the dumpster by nearly 20% in a four month period in just the dormatory alone. Imagine if this were to be done in all of the classrooms and computer labs in that school's eight- building-campus... that's a LOT less bags of trash going to the landfills! :)
Run a Family Day Out themed around Recyclying
Is not what can you do to get people in your neighborhood to recycle. As long as you and the rest of us are willing to recycle. And do the right thing. I my self love to recycle. And some of my neighbors don't. I try to keep my self outer trouble. The city should find the address in their garbage and fine them for not recycling. Wry do we have to do the dirty work for them; There are the ones who are getting pay not us. And we recycle.
help them with it
offer them a kind of stamp that can be redeemed for a product everytime they bring in 5 pounds worth of recycling. That would maybe get people to motivate somewhat. Like the green stamps back in the 70's when I was a kid.
People are never going to be excited about recycling. The government must step in if they want success in regards to saving the environment because it is just a fact that the majority of the people don't care.

It's time for us as a people to start making some changes, let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live, and let's change the way we treat each other, you see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do what we gotta do...to survive.
ride around naked so they can see how I look.
(Although last time I checked I looked so damn good I wanted to carry that mirror everywhere I went)
Yes I Dooooo!!!!!!
(xoxoxoxo) for me
Offer them money. The mighty dollar always make people interested. That's reality.
Threaten them
put up signs in the neighborhood, and practice what you preach.
make laws that make it mandatory for people to recycle pay a heavy fine not to do it.
I don't think you'll ever get people just overly excited about it, but I think the number one thing with increasing recycling is to make it easier to do. If I see a recycling bin nearby and I have some paper and/or plastic I can recycle, I'll throw it in, but if I can't find one, or I'm nowhere near one, I usually just throw it away with the rest of the trash because I don't have time to go around looking for one. That's the same problem most people have.

I would suggest that if it's an area where there isn't a city pickup of the trash (where people have to take it to the dump themselves), build a recycling center in a population center. Because it's easier to get to, people might make a better effort to separate their trash out just to save the time of driving somewhere to throw it into a dump.
Tell them if they do not recycle then the planet would not be a nice place to live in.
Show them scientific evidence that supports it does more damage to the environment to reprocess and recycle it than it does to manufacturers the materials.

I bet that will get them excited.to throw it away.
give them directions to the nearest recycling center and explain to them that bringing their empties back can give them free beer, that would work on me anyways and is basically why i do it, oh and that whole save the earth thing is ok i guess as well, lol..
I think Recycling is awesome, and I think it should be MADE MANDATORY!! and if the people don't recyle, they should be made to pay $50. + a month fine until they do recycle.. save the earth people... we recycle so much!
I was just thinking about this, actually.

Our local elementary school is having an aluminum can drive through September, and I was just looking at all the recycling bins not out by the road on Wednesday morning. I thought about spreading word of the can drive through flyers or email to people in the neighborhood, and offering to pick up bags of cans from people, if they would just save them for a couple of months. Still, that's not really encouraging recycling, it's more like asking for people to donate something (even if it is "garbage"). I'd like to see something more permanent.

Getting people excited seems like a tall order; maybe getting them lukewarm is all we can really hope for. I will be following this discussion to see what ideas others have. Thanks for asking!
For ppl I know that don't like to recycle, I explain, that it is for future generation's benefit. I think ppl do not see that it will help in the long-term. There is not a real quick results factor. So, anyone who has kids or grandkids should appreciate that when they recycle, they are giving their heirs the gift of a cleaner planet.

I recycled, before I knew what it was.just comes natural to me. I keep a little knife by the sink and cut a line down the label and then I rinse out the can. I just walk it out to the bin as part of my routine. I do have to take it to the recycle center...not too far from here.
