On Climate Change. Let's wait and see?
And after 'waiting and seeing' that it is caused by human behaviour, won't that be a little bit too late?
Anyway, what's wrong with cleaning up the planet a bit, man-made Climate Change, or not?
Answer:
Yeah, I agree with you. "Waiting and seeing" is like getting cancer and not getting chemotherapy treatments or radiation, just "wait and see" what happens. By the time you realize that the cancer is going to kill you, it's too late to do anything.
Even if all the scientists somehow misread all their research (unlikely), it wouldn't hurt to reduce our emissions and conserving our resources a little. It's only going to help us in the end.
No, the most idiotic thing is pretending to know it is caused by humans and then panicking and then suggesting that using one square of toilet paper and florescent light bulbs is going to save us.
As far as it goes, I fully agree with you.
But--there is conclusive proof that global warming/climate change is caused by human activity. The fact that some bong-sucking idiots hiding in their moommy's basements dont want to accept that is irrelevant.
No one is talking about 'cleaning up,' they are talking about 'reducing' man made emmissions and hoping the earth stops getting hotter. Which is not neccisarily a bad thing, it would increase growing seasons and potentialy help world hunger, and only the most radical 'what if' senarios put the sea levels rising enough to swallow citys and stupid stuff like that, the ocean is huge, it can swell a bit and spill over.
Also: there is significant evidence the earth is actualy cooling-maybe we should all start freeking out about that.
There is a new discovery that Greenland was very much warmer 200,000 years ago than it now is. There was no human element involved in this warming way back so does it make any sense to at least get some of the facts right before making big mistakes.
They said "More research is needed" 30 years ago.
And 20 years ago.
And 15 years ago.
And just last week.
What are they waiting for? Some big hurricane to wipe out a major city? Oh wait happened 2 years ago. Still, "not sure".
Think about it. Doesn't this waffling and rationalizing seem just like what addicts say when you suggest it's time to cut back on the booze, meth, TV or World of Warcraft?
So what's more likely? That impartial scientists would "make up this threat" because of some hidden eco-agneda? Or America is just afraid of giving up its lifestyle?
Well guess what, we don't have to give up our lifestyle. Cars will get better like iPods... as they get greener. Look at the Silverado hybrid, its target market is truck driving tradesmen who vote Republican. They deny global warming, but they love the 2500W inverter that runs off the hybrid pack, saves them the cost of keeping generators at the jobsite. That's an example of "better". Fasten your seat belt for many more.
Plug-in hybrid cars are going to make your gasoline bill go down... a LOT. People will actually end up driving more miles not less, because they can afford it. And performance? The big battery can be put anywhere on the frame, so lower center of gravity and 50/50 weight distribution. Electrics have already been banned from racing for winning too easily.
Houses will get greener. Your mortgage will go up, but your energy costs will go down more.
Of course, we could play the denial game... but then we won't get any of those goodies. How dumb is that?
Ok it has been proven we are going through Global Warming caused by man. The only way to help reduce the effects, are to work collectivelly on changing our world. Not talk about it but act. Cleaning will help and so will reducing sorry emissions. Time for everyone to start thinking about Renewable Energy, which is a clean way to cook, provide power and heat and cool the home.
www.motherearthnews.com has a lot of neat stuff you can do at home. Just to read the articles and checkout stories is free. Or you can subscribe to the mag. But they are "Green"
If everyone would go Green for one day week, it would be catchy, and I think it would cause a copy cat effect. I turn off my main circuit breaker 3 hours per day. Geez! dropped my power bill by 50.00 to 75.00 per month. We are total electric.
Nothing wrong with "cleaning up the planet a bit". however Draconian measures that are being suggested are a bit over the top and in any case would be ineffective even at those levels. Even if Global Warming is, in fact, man caused no one can say with any certainty if there will be more harm than good... perhaps the Brits, for example, would enjoy a bit of warmth added to their dreary climate... Or the Icelanders might like to be able to plant more crops as they did in the Medieval Warm Period.
I agree. I am not totally convinced yet, still studying. I do agree we have little to lose by going ahead and reducing our dependence on foreign oil and reducing CO2 emissions and other pollution. It is a win win scenario. In most cases, I can save money and help my countries security.
I use very little electrical power by just insulating and tightening up my small house, and being careful with power usage. I got a VW that gets over 30MPG, and looking for one of those small deisels that get over 50GPM like they have in Europe and Japan. I save money, help the earth, and help with using less foreign oil.
If the man made CO2 theory is correct, then I am already headed in the right direction. Can't lose.
If it is a man made climate change the only way to stop it is by population control. California says it will have 22 million more people in 50 years. If you have that kind of growth around the world it doesn't matter what kind of conservation programs are in effect, there will be massive environmental issues. Does anyone remember 20 years ago when all the experts said we were heading for an ice age?
I agree completely. The point of science is to give us advanced warning before the facts become obvious to everyone. Sure, we could sit around for the next few years to wait and see if what the theory says is really 100% accurate, but if we do it'll be too late do do anything about it. I guess we'll have to be satisfied with a 95% (according to the IPCC AR4) chance instead, eh?
I wonder if they'll would go for 'wait and see' on terrorism. Terrorism, something that is almost random attack, hurts relatively few people compared to famine, poverty, lack of health care...etc. And if we screw up Earth I don't know if they have another Earth ready to go. Seem like 'wait and see' is better suited for war on terror. Although that's not exactly my position. Or, I guess if we screw up our habitat, Earth, terrorists will surfer too. Sounds like a plan.
Absolutely right!
It's okay to hope for the best, but survivors prepare for the worst.
As I was in my basement sucking on my bong, it dawned on me that our planet was heating up like never before in history. I thought, wow i am so ******* smart for figuring this out. I thought, wowww, last summer there was like hardly any snow. I doubt that this has ever happened before in human history. Then I realized that Katrina flooded New Orleans, a city below sea level. This must have been the first weather catastrophe ever on Earth. Then there was that day that it was so hot i was sweating on the couch that i was convinced that it must be global warming. Global warming is soooo totally real, like, weather patterns have probably never changed. The earth also has probably never changed. The deserts have probably always been where they are now for the last million years, and the lakes. So, like, we gotta stop global warming.
Good analogy, Marie P:
"Yeah, I agree with you. "Waiting and seeing" is like getting cancer and not getting chemotherapy treatments or radiation, just "wait and see" what happens. By the time you realize that the cancer is going to kill you, it's too late to do anything."
So, if your city councilman said, "computer modeling and statistical analysis shows a high incidence of cancer in your neighborhood, so we're mandating that you undergo chemotherapy, because...well, you know, we don't want to have to wait and see until it's too late," you wouldn't have a problem with that?
This isn't about conserving, because I already do that. This is about government and corporate corruption making money through the marketing of fear.
Wait and see sounds like a plan to me. Otherwise we will spend enormous amounts of money and give away hard earned personal freedom based on a questionable theory.
