The sun isn't causing global warming?
Serioulsy people how can so many of you ignore the huge amounts of evidence of the existence of global warming as proved by so many of the worlds top scientists? i don't mean this one article is enough but there have been thousands of such articles which show that the current change in climate can not be attributed to natural changes.
Does anyone out there really have any evidence that this is all natural?, and don't start quoting that farsical channel 4 documentary which used ridiculously out of date and misleading data, i mean real findings from actual scientists?

Stephen M - go on line and find the chart showing the temperatures for the Holocene period, the period of time we are in. Explain why the Earth warmed drastically at the end of the last Ice Age some 10,500 yrs ago, to temperatures much higher than today. It wasn't caused by Man. It stayed warm for 7,500 yrs then cooled. Again Man had no influence. Then the Earth warmed again so that the Vikings were able to grow wheat in Greenland. Man didn't cause that warming either and it was warmer than today. Then there was a drastic cooling in medieval times, the Baltic Sea froze solid in winter, glaciers destroyed alpine villages. The Earth has been gradually warming since then, but the last blast of this cold period was in 1815 when there was snow every month and Napoleon's army froze in Russia. Since previous warmings were natural, and we have been in a warming trend for over 200 years, since before the expansion of industry, it is entirely possible that the present Climate Change is almost entirely or entirely natural.
I think you may be a True Believer, but examine those facts. Explain the cause of previous climatic warmings and define what is the "normal" temperature over the past 10,500 yrs. Then ask what political group, and their fellow travellers, stands to gain from pushing action on GW. They will gain the power to regulate industry and your lives by law and what cannot be regulated they will tax, so they can buy votes. They are invested in global disaster and if despite all the controls and taxes, despite everything they do, the climate continues to get warmer, do you think they will admit being wrong or do you think they will clamp down even harder to "Save the Planet"?
Be honest everyone. Think hard and do some research. You can vote my comment down, but if you cannot answer the questions about the cause of previous climate warming, then you cannot be certain this time is different. And there are REAL scientists who are not dominated by or beholden to a political faction determined to use the issue to gain political power. A consensus of educated men once held that the Earth was flat, that the sun went around the Earth and they were wrong, the contrarians they persecuted turned out to be right. So having a consensus has nothing to do with being right.
Global warming only becomes a problem when Jade Goody either bends over and farts or lifts up her arms..
It's amazing that without the Sun Earth would be a frozen ball.well, that's exception to tectonic activity.

If global warming is due to natural variation, there's nothing we can do about it.
If global warming is due to human activity, every one of us needs to change our behaviour to avert the crisis.
So, it's no surprise that the lazy thinkers choose to believe the theory that requires them to do nothing, despite the overwhelming evidence.
Governments using the opportuninty to raise revenue doesn't help allay the conspiracy theorists.
In reality, if governments are to use taxation as a weapon against global warming, it needs to be at a much higher level than at present. Present rates of petrol taxation make us cross, but aren't high enough to get us to change our behaviour.
It depends on which scientist you believe all the scientists on the government payroll follow the government line that we are responsible for it and our taxes must increase to some how reverse the situation, while the independent scientists state that it is a natural cycle caused by the sun and other forces which we have no control over
last year in England a bit of a fuss was made because the tar on the roads was melting due to the heat,The tar on the roads melted every summer when I was wee lad in the fifties and that was in Scotland, Our winters were more severe then ,normally 3/5 inches snow each year,in past 2 years lucky if we got 2 inches of snow.. Roses have been budding throughout the winter months for past 2/3 years.Any idea as to what damage these space missions are doing to our atmosphere,Problems are natural and man made in my opinion
Lets chop down all the trees, cover the planet in concrete and hopefully the energy from the sun will bounce off the concrete and propell us away. Oh, hold on, we've already done that, and we just made things worse.

No the sun cannot cause global warming. I am glad there are more people who have opened their eyes to the conclusive evidence of global warming. Here are more scientific reports on the reality of GW. People are confusing historical episodes of natural GW and ice ages with this MAN MADE dilemma. These same people will probably claim that we Humans are not causing the next great extinction of life on earth and will also say it is natural. Do these people have vegetables for brains?

The latest study shows pretty conclusively that if global surface temperature was solely dependant on the sun's natural cycle of activity, we would have been experiencing a period of cooling from 1985 to the present. During that period, however, the global surface temperature has continued to rise at a rate as fast, if not faster, than that prior to 1985.
It isn't absolute conclusive proof that CO2 emissions cause global warming, but it is another nail in the coffin of the main alternative arguments. The proposition that the current rate of global warming is a direct result of solar activity just does not hold water any more.
So in the words of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his "Sherlock Holmes" novels, when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
What remains now is a massive amount of evidence supporting the theory that human CO2 emissions are the major cause of the current trend in global warming.
I must add, however, that the government puts far too much emphasis at the moment on individuals taking up a low carbon life style, in an attempt to shift the responsibility onto the public. It's certainly true that every little helps, but if the bigger concerns take no action it will all be for nothing.
What the government needs to do, is take decisive action on low carbon energy production and on reducing carbon emissions in transport and industry, in addition to using diplomatic pressure to encourage other countries to do the same.
