Sounds like a bad idea to me on all levels.
A bonfire once a year isn't going to make any difference. I get the feeling you don't agree to it through religious reasons and NOT environmentally ones.

I think you're being very unfair to the people of the area. They're celebrating the victory of William of Orange over King James (the first?) at the Battle of th Boyne. Britain would have been under Catholic rule over the last 300 years had the Jacobites won that battle.
Speaking as a Republican, Southern Irish Catholic, I can't say I'm delighted for them, but it is their tradition to celebrate it. Just as the rest of you celebrate Guy Fawks in a similarly pagan manner(burn baby burn)!!
I find your first contributer's a little narrow minded, seeing as the North's tragic history has been partly Britain's fault!!
If you want to cut back on celebrations, why not enforce a no lights at Christmas law?
It s a ceremonial thing and has a lot of symbolism for some celebrations. I am a pagan and we build bonfires to celebrate the sabbats. What about all the other things that contribute to pollution eg cars and modes of transport. Bet you drive a car?
