Is a septic tank more environmentally friendly? If not, what is??
Answer:
The septic system is an excellent way to dispose of domestic waste. It works by leaching wastes into the soil that has been test via a perc and mantle. I have had many septic systems over the years and they work great. Just don't use a lot of bleach in washing, add some bugs to ensure the tank works well and don't flush tampons and other stuff that would screw the system up. I would also recommend to have it pumped periodically. I do mine once every 3 years because I live with my wife and 3 daughters and they tend to use a LOT of TP.
If it isn't too old then it does more good than harm to the environment. It's meant to act as a place where sewage has time to decompose some before being sent to the sewers. You still have to be careful about what you put down the drain.
The arobic septic systems seem to be the most environment friendly. Simply put it disperses waste water through sprinklers on the lawn.no it doesnt stink either. My fater has on of these systems and it seems to work pretty good not to mention the green ,thick grass.
Get a house with a pipe line to a sewage plant. They are government controlled and as far as i know is the most Eco-friendly. I live in South Africa though. One on the countries with the best water quality.
If it isn't too old.. yes it can be very friendly. Waste is broken down by bacteria in the septic system rather than send it to a treatment plant.
Keep the pump running and use Rid-X or something similar each month, and have it pumped out every 3 to 5 years and you should be fine.
septic tank is perfect ,if you have at least 2 compartments connected with a low opening so that only the water leads into the seccond compartment
the first compartment is where the decomposition takes place
,you can than have a french drain (a covered ditch filled with rocks )to futher filter the water into the sides ,and plant trees on top ,(fruit trees is ok)
if there is still any water coming out of the end dig another hole to absorb this ,
decomposed sewage water functions as a good fertilizer especially for trees and does not contaminate
we have had these systems all of my life ,in Africa Europe etc
under all climatic conditions with never any negative results as far as the garden was concerned or anybody else
That depends. Sewer plants are methane producers. Most of them waste it, some of them use it. Methane is a greenhouse gas you don't hear much about. It is also an odorless fuel that can be used. Read up on methane digesters. The aerobic and old anaerobic septic systems both just waste methane, and it goes off into the atmosphere. A methane digester will produce a gas that can be used to help heat your hot water.
I think the septic system is best as long as it is designed and sized properly. No power needed for pumps, and all the water and nutrients end up back in the ground. Can't get much more natural than that, unless you just crap in the woods.
They are great. In UK so much cheaper as there is no sewage component to your water bill - we are on a meter and average bill is about £38 a quarter for water only. There was 6 of us in the house. My friend lives on her own and her bills are a lot more.
It works perfectly, previous owners said they never emptied it once, and we haven't so it has worked without emptying for 29 years. Doesn't smell either. They are not dear to have emptied.
I don't put 'chemicals' down the loo. I use bicarbonate of soda and rub over with white wine vinegar. Then again nobody should be putting chemicals down the loo anyway. If they didn't all the solid waste could be used by farmers to grow crops with. Instead we waste £millions each year, processing this solid waste unnecessarily, then farmers spray on even more chemicals to replace the nutrients leeching out of the soil caused by intensive farming. Madness.
Go for it and enjoy your lower bills.
