Where does the money come from for the US Superfund?

I have heard that there is a tax, but does this apply only to industry or is it a public tax too?

I'm from the UK btw, just doing a bit of research!

Answer:
Superfund was originally funded by a tax on the chemical and petroleum industry, now expired. Some general tax revenues go to Superfund now.

EPA also funds Superfund by recovering costs from "responsible parties", those who polluted a site.

At one time Superfund had large amounts of money, now that the dedicated tax has long since expired it's getting a little thin. Often responsible parties have gone out of business leaving "orphan sites".

Its a public tax. Every US citizen "contributes" whether they like it or not.

Even if it was a tax n large corporations... they'd just add the cost of the tax to their product... so the little guy pays it anyway.
