Your opinion?
In short we have far too many people on the planet than the planet can support and to survive as a species we must reduce our numbers.
Consider that the developed (USA) and the developing nations (China and India) of the world are doing the most damage top the planet, and the undeveloped nations are doing the least damage.
How in your opinion can we ethically reduce the human population of this planet?
Answer:
Paradigm shift.
In many European countries, zero and negative population growth has been reached. They've even had to turn to immigration to maintain a workforce. Here in the USA, there is a big talk about the need for immigration to fill employment in many low-paying jobs. What has caused this shift? Families having less children. Couples deciding to not have children. More and more people remaining single and childless.
Previously, our agricultural society required large families to insure the families income. Marriage and children were the normal next step for any man and woman in a relationship. There was a greater societal pressure to provide your parents with heirs.I know it may sound selfish, but people have begun to realize that having less or no children raises the their standard of living. Yep...a little materialism can be a GOOD thing.
Give the people of China and India a taste of that higher standard of living and they may start realizing the same thing. A paradigm shift in the value system that can decrease population growth in the span of just a few generations. Here in the US, it has only taken a half century or so.
But it will get worse before it gets better. That increase in standard of living will increase life spans, decrease infant mortality. If we can make it through the rough patch - sticking it out until the fever breaks - then we may see a significant change in population growth in the lifetimes of many people here today.
This my current ethics response to denialists ...
........
Dear CC denialists. I welcome your skepticism...
Denial of climate change is your right ( though I am a believer in CC)
However, it's always smart to have a fall-back strategy and plan - water is getting scarcer so - save water for your selves at least.
And give some thought to this - if you are wrong, obfuscation of the debate and a fossil-hungry lifestyle will be partly responsible for the misery of millions of people and the extinction of millions of species ...
Happy water collecting .. ..
K :-)
There's nothing you can do to stop uneducated people in third world countries from breeding. I am not a global warming nut, I'm not even going to try and debate it. But it's always a good thing to strive for less pollution, more recycling, and cleaner forms of energy. There are a million reasons to get ourselves off of oil dependence, least of which is global warming. It definitely has harmful byproducts though. With current technology, we could transition away from oil completely within 20 years, I really believe that. Lobbyists and corrupt politics are the primary obstacles, not technical ability.
1. "...too much CO2...produced to support...people..." People don't use CO2 for anything; that's the problem.
2. Too many people? I think that modern earth-friendly technology is being, and will be, forced into the mainstream as resources dwindle and the human race suffers the consequences of its industrial past. Nature, inhumane warring, and personal interactions, cause the deaths of plenty of people for population control. The only ethical thing to do about reduction is education: education containing all the subjects involved with this discussion.
3. Adopt first if you want to procreate!
this probably lies to the people itself.
