To help global warming, why not put filters on mufflers to reduce pollution as a short term fix?

It makes tons of sense to create new modes of transportation to lower green house gas emissions, but what about just creating addons to vehicles currently in use? Couldn't we come up with a filter of sorts to attach to cars now to reduce their emissions?

Answer:
Creating this filter to reduce emissions sounds great on paper, but you'd need to consider a few points.

1. If you want to create these filters, you'll need to build more machines and possibly more factories to manufacture the filters. How much pollution will this factory make in the process?

2. What kinds of resources will be required to produce these filters?

3. When the filters are ready to be replaced, what do you do with them? Do we find a way to harmlessly recycle them without releasing the contents into the air? Do we throw them away without as much as a second thought, adding to the already overflowing landfills?

These are just some of the points from an environmental point of view. You'd also have to consider the implications on the automotive industry in regards to how this could potentially screw up the car's running process.
Its called a catalytic converter. Look it up.
that makes the most sense, to just upgrade the vehicles we have now to lower green house emissions and then worry about new modes of transport,
the only thing i see wrong with that is are people going to really buy add-ons for their car because I do not think many people care about the green house emissions and the environment
Why do you think we have unleaded gas now days along with catalitic converters on the exhaust systems. The new diesels are burning lower sulfer fuel than the old low sulfer fuel and their exhaust system now have particulate traps to further reduce emissions and the engines themselves run cleaner. They're working on it, but it's a slow, expensive process so in the meantime we need to reduce unnecessary driving, carpool, walk more or ride a bike.
How many catalytic convertors can be put on one car? Mine had three. After a point the back pressure would probably reduce mileage to the point that there would be no net benefit.
There is no such thing as a co2 filter and their probably never will be.
it does make alot of sense.. here is what i have done. i have put air filters on my cows noses to catch unfiltered impurities that could pollute upon exit of the cow, put catalytic converters and tubes in their bungs to catch the methane they blow out and reuse it in my toyota prius.. to be really green i quit driving my ancient polluting prius and ride a tricycle to work... i also invented a recycling system for when i eat beans, and it works, but my pants wont fit over it.. back to the drawing board. when i get it perfected im gonna make sure every one uses one...
There is no practical way to capture the CO2 output from a car.
