Is sharing cars with friends better than taking a ride on a bus in reducing greenhouse gases emissions?
Answer:
Depends on the bus route and the efficiency of your cars. If you can walk to the bus stop, then the bus is going to be better. If you are going to have to drive to get on the bus, like a park & ride, then there's a good chance that car-pooling is better.
Sharing a car with a friend as a purchase would be a bad idea. Friendships are too easily broken and with something like a car I think you could see a rise in violence.
But car pool would probably work. As a matter of fact in Charlotte Nc, they have an HOV lane which if you have two or more people in your car you can drive around rush hour traffic.
I don't think that would reduce green house gas emissions by that much. Simply because so many people have enormous gas guzzlers that even if they caught a ride with a friend it would be about the same as a bus.
But what do I know I don't have a degree or anything in any of that stuff.
No. The bus is going to go and use the same amount of fuel whether you're on it or not. If you have your own car you will just be creating more pollution.
Tough question because if you actually study it .. it could come out either way.. On par in ideal conditions (e.g. with a full bus) I believe that the bus would come out ahead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
As one answer stated buses have a planned route and a single extra person on a bus would add very little to emissions since the bus would be emitting greenhouse gases anyway. So taking it in a vacuum (i.e. neglecting other factors).. .if you live on a bus route and can take it.. a bus would probably reduce more..since you would completely eliminate the emissions from a personal vehicle.
However, if nobody took the bus and the route was entirely canceled it would be a more difficult question since buses do not get great fuel efficiency.. so for instance if you were the only person on the bus.. obviously not..
