More than likely yes they are, somewhere. There are inner city schools that are harsh and can be dangerous, metal detectors, police guard on site, etc. There are schools that can be gated and very exclusive. Just depends on which movie(s) you are referring to if they are realistic portrayals.

Every movie I've seen depicts schools differently.
Within ten miles of my home there are schools which are completely different from each other in every way.

I think all schools have differences. I have attended schools in Illinois (USA) and they were lax in a small city but very conformed in the big city- metal detectors, ids worn at all times and hall monitors at every corridor.
As with any school , you have your clicks - the preps jocks geeks and goths!! (Many others those are examples!)
