Carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide or CO2 emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels; in the case of an organization, business or enterprise, as part of their everyday operations; in the case of an individual or household, as part of their daily lives; or a product or commodity in reaching market. In materials, is essentially a measure of embodied energy, the result of life cycle analysis.

A carbon footprint is often expressed as tons of carbon dioxide or tons of carbon emitted, usually on a yearly basis. There are many versions of calculators available for carbon footprinting.

This is directly related to the amount of natural resources consumed, increasingly used or referred to as a measure of environmental impact. Carbon dioxide is recognized as a greenhouse gas, of which increasing levels in the atmosphere are linked to global warming and climate change.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol sets forth a methodology by which voluntary emission reduction can be monetized in the form of a carbon project. These standards involve the use of an environmental proof called additionality.

A carbon label - which shows the carbon footprint embodied in a product in bringing it to the shelf was introduced in the UK in March 2007 by the Carbon Trust. Examples of products featuring their carbon footprint are Walkers Crisps, Innocent Smoothies and Boots shampoos.

CarbonCounted, which launched in early 2007, is a Canadian based GHG carbon label system that allows companies to link with and leverage their supply chain. By displaying the CarbonCounted footprint on a product, a supplier is publishing their footprint and committing to emissions reduction.

Carbon Reduction Institute, NoCO2 & LowCO certification labels were launched in Australia to allow consumers to determine the reductions of GHG emissions that companies have made toward reductng their Carbon Footprint. The Carbon Reduction Institute uses a combination of direct life cycle studies and life cycle analyses based on a financial control rational to determine the carbon footprint of companies.

Its the net amount of CO2 tat's added to the atmosphere as a result of a particular activity or individual/organizations' activities.

For example, your "footprint" would be the CO2 you release directly (by driving your car, running a gas lawnmower, etc.) plus the remissions required to produce the electric power in your home (plus anything else that led to a net releasse of CO2).

The idea is to think about how to shrink that carbon footprint--by reducing gas or energy consumption, or by doing things like installing solar panels. For organizations, the same principle applies, just on a larger scale.
Its what you leave on the carpet when your bio diesel powered car blows heavy black soot on the driveway and you step in it.
It basically just refers to your overall global warming impact.
It is a term thought up by the global warming nuts who want to sell you carbon credits. They would actually have you believe that if you give them money, your impact on the environment will be lessened because they plant a tree.

So, for example, though Al Gore burns ONE HE11 OF A LOT of fossil fuels, it is okay, because he buys carbon credits to offset his travel in private jets, etc. So rather than conserve (which is what he says you and I should do) he throws money at a company which he is part owner of and claims that he is carbon neutral.

WHAT A JOKE!!
Carbon foot print is one of the measures of CO2(Carbon Dioxide) emissions and green houses gases(which trap the heat within the earth's atmosphere) from an individual, family, community, or nation or an entity which contributes to the Global warming.
The amount of carbon dioxide emission per unit area or per unit population.
