Why do we produce so much rubbish?

why do the goverment allow products that can not be recycled to still be produced, Australia have band all light bulbs that are not the energy efficiant ones, look at all the non recycleable products that get put into landfill?

Answer:
I think it might be more prudent to tackle the packaging manufacturers who inundate us with the crap to start with.
In the US the problem is recycling. Here is Alabama we don't have recycling centers so everything gets put in the trash. The boxes that food comes in (cereal boxes) etc, diapers, newspapers etc take up a tremendous amount of space in the trash
Supermarkets can be the worst for unecessary packaging,

Myself and my wife have started shopping from realfood direct. They do organic produce from local farms delivered in a reusable box. No plastics, no paper, no cardboard.

Look around on the internet for organic food deliveries and this way you wont need to buy food where some of the cost goes to producing the unecessary packaging.
if you're talking about the UK, we have just implemented the WEEE directive. Since 2nd july, You will now pay a supplement on many products, including all light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, which is to go towards recycling those products.

this will encourage people to get greener products, and encourage manufacturers to make greener products.

you don't need to ban things to make a change

manufacturers dont put in unnecessary packing for fun.. it costs them money!!
the packaging is there because WE - the consumers - demand perfect fruit, veg with no blemishes, easily stackable boxes, stuff that will fit in the fridge door, fruit from all over the world, etc, etc.
Don't blame the manufacturer, until you're prepared to make a change yourself
China, India and the USA knock us into fits when it comes to rubbish..whatever we do will make little if any difference so why bother?
the solution is not the problem.
The problem is the solution and the problem is us, you and I for wanting/craving/desiring so much.
If we only bought what we needed, really needed rather than what we wanted there would be no problem
:)
we proudce garbage because
1 only you are thinking about this or some more but there are somany people in this world how nead's a luxurias life and those people dose not care for this
it is a simple proccess 1 people are having money...
2 they want to live luxurias life ....
3 they spend money ...
4 huge company gose in profit ....
5 then they don't care..
etc..
There is too much wrapping on products now also you can't buy a magazine nowadays without about six leaflet falling out of them advertising various goods or services. I for one don't read them but fortunately i recycle paper, but think on the sheer waste.
It's up to us to refuse excessive packaging and buy local products - and yes , refuse plastic bags . I use canvas bags which I bought in Germany quite some years ago and they still are in use , they don't break and they don't end up in landfills . I always get strange looks in shops when I refuse their plastic bags , that says it all .
agree with neogriff.
Many products we buy have far too much packaging. The package firms should be taken to task over this.
For ever one who recycles there rubbish properly there 50 that half do it and 100 that don't bother,
It's not because they are not capable, its because they cant be bothered, to many people think that it will make little or no difference to the end result, and it wont happen in there life time, the only answer to global warning is to cut down the population of the world which in turn will cut down the amount of produce etc that is used, this will cut down the profits that the big firms make, so it wont happen and sometime in the future the lights will go out, but i will be long gone by then, wont I?
The government allow so many things to be made, constructed or sold that re not recyclable because the will of the individual people in the UK is not currently sufficient to override the concerns of big business. Governments on the whole won't do anything that might upset the economy in a big way. They prefer to wait on the light going on in people's heads and getting businesses to see the marketing value of having a green product. Of course, some businesses then claim it costs more to have a green product so reducing it's availablility to people who can afford it. Seeing as how the majority of common domestic waste is probably produced by poorer households in the first place, it seems to be a bit self defeating to make products more expensive.
