Why do you think all taxi cabs and other forms of mass transit should convert to electic vehicles?
Answer:
Because mass transit is just that a way to move masses of people and if in bigger cities we can move the masses with little or no environmental impact it can make a huge difference... every day millions of people travel in new york city alone on mass transit and if everyone of those rides was fully green that would keep massive amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere and be a great way to improve the way of life in cities
idk
To protect the envirmoent from global warming and polution. So the world is not only sutiable for the generation but so it may be better for the future.
I don't think they should convert them to electric vehicles. Gas pollution isn't as bad as what big cities used to have with horse drawn cabs. The manure drew flies & bugs & created an environment of deadly bacteria & disease.
cause thats the whole point of paying for transportation instead of everyone having there own car. to reduce the amount of pollution. thats the point, and if there is a way to reduce pollution even more than why not go for it??
Subways, light rail and trolley-buses already are electric.
Diesel bus lines can easily be converted to electric simply by hanging trolley bus lines and substations, and buying trolley buses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/trolley_bus...
There are also electric buses and hybrid buses.

It'd be smart for the taxicab company to convert to electric. Taxicab service beats cars to death, and electric cars are extremely durable and last "forever" due to so few moving parts. Range might be a problem, but that's what "strong hybrid" technology is for.
Personally I don't think they should convert. In a number of articles that I have read regarding electric cars that are out now, it has been proved that they do not infact help save gas and help with milage the way they were supposed to. They are not the savior that everyone expected them to be. I do know people who have them and are very happy with them, but they don't see the great change at the gas station in the lowering of the amount of gas needed vs some of the smaller cars that are out, lets say, vs the mini that I own. Yes, they are better than the Lexus SuV that I own, but then almost anything would be. So, as far as Taxi's go, don't see a need to change there, as the electric cars are at this point rather small cars and cabs need to be much larger. Perhaps in the future this might be something that would work. Ok, as to mass transit, buses, I know that in NY they are trying to use buses that are made in Japan that do not emit as much pollution as the former buses, but it's NY and who notices much. But, I do agree that any form of mass transit that would be less polluting would be a great help, but I don't think the technology is out there yet to convert to electric. If they wanted to it would almost have to be a reversion to the old street cars where you would pick up the electricity from over head lines, and that would not go over all that well at this time. It's an idea who's time has not yet come, but a good idea to think about for the future.
Yeah right! And if you think taxi rides cost too much now, who do you think is going to pay for all the conversions?? Ideas like that are bankrupting the world already.
Well they should immediately switch to at least the new generation hybrid that runs the motor at maximum efficiency all the time and uses that to power batteries. Very little power loss there, plus you don't have to restructure an entire fleet.
Large cities already have it in the bus systems, Toronto, New York, and another very large city that I can't recall.
But yes, there should be a change to super-high efficiency. If that is electric, great, if that's hybrid, fine. But these companies spend billions on gas, if they make the changes, if nothing else, it means more gas for the rest of us, which hopefully means lower cost at the pumps.
There should be something in place so that they have to phase their fleet, every one they replace should be replaced with a hybrid at least now. It saves them a ton of money in the longrun.
City vehicles are good candidates for hybrid or electric vehicles because they have plenty of opportunity to benefit from regenerative braking, and not burn any fuel while sitting idle and waiting.
On the highway there is really no benefit to having a hybrid except they are usually more aerodynamic. But if a non hybrid had the same shape it would get better gas mileage because it wouldn't carry the extra weight and pay the added rolling resistance penalty.
I think strictly city vehicles should explore switching their fleets to hybrids or EV's. They would get the most benefit right away, and help global warming/dependence on foreign oil while eventually saving their businesses tons of money on fuel costs.
This is a slippery slope. If all cars were battery powered the electric power would come from the power plants mostly from some type of fuel. Overall the efficiency would be way less than gasoline cars. If this electricity came solely from nuclear, hydro or solar then this could be viable. This can not happen for a very long time.
