Does leaving the aircon on for long periods damage/help the environment?

I mean an aircon makes the room cold right? so does it help in global warming by making the world colder? or do the chemicals it produces damage the environment.

Answer:
An air conditioner which is in good condition does not by itself produce any gases or chemicals detrimental to the environment. However, it is quite a heavy consumer of energy and where that energy is derived from sources other than renewables, like fossil fuels, the end result, according to global warming adherents, is pumping more co2 into the environment. In effect, what these people are saying is that we should use all forms of energy sparingly, in order to prevent excess production of greenhouse gases. The counter-argument to this proposal is that global warming will happen with or without our involvement, therefore there is no need to be too frugal with our use of energy if we really need to use it. I personally stand in the middle of these two arguments. I believe there is a way to continue with our normal way of life whilst the planet also takes its naturally destined course. It is doubtful whether we as humans can really alter the course of this planet by more than a few degrees.
unless its powered by sola or wind its damaging!
I think it might be detrimental to the environment in global warming and brings about wastage of resources. But the damage it does to our skin is worse than any of this and the result is almost instant.
