What is sellotape made out of and how do you make it?

Answer:
It is made out of cellulose fibres from plants. They are treated with Acetic Anhydride to produce Cellulose Acetate, which is what the tape is made of. The Acetate is turned into pellets and heated in vats. It is then applied by large rollers onto a moving conveyer belt in a thin layer. An 'anti-sticking' chemical is applied to one side of the tape, and a resin based emulsion glue is applied to the other. It is dried in an oven and wound onto spools, and cut to the correct width.
