Worm farms?

thinking of making my own worm farm instead of buying one. i did hear that if you order one it comes with worms as well?? do they have to be a certain breed of worm or will the normal garden worm work?? has anyone got one?? does it smell at all??thanks

Answer:
I have done this and it is great, odor free and environmentally a plus. It also saves on fertilizer for your garden. I took 4 old 32 gallon plastic trash cans with lids and cracked or holes in the bottom for drainage. Add the waste vegetable matter you have from your kitchen, grass clippings, leaves, dead plants etc. No animal products! If you have a corner store that sells fishing supplies ask for a package of worms from the refrigerator. These much prefer a compost pile to a fish hook and will be eternally grateful to you for all the help you can provide. Put your vegetation in one trash can. Make sure it is wet and gently add your new pets with love. Put a lid on it. As you accumulate more vegetation add it to the same trash can and check it every day or two so it doesn't dry out. If there is anything a worm hates worse than a hook it is dieing of thirst. About once a week empty your trash can into another trash can. If it is too heavy to lift use a shovel or something to take it out a little at a time. When you have no more room in a trash can it is time to start filling a second can. Eventually you will have three of the four filled and can use the empty one for turning/rotating your compost. Remove compost when the worms are finished with it and use it liberally. Worms are interesting to watch. Earth worms live about 3 weeks and in their life cycle you will see them mate, multiply and grow. It is best not to feed them anything with pesticides on it. One animal product you can add to the compost is egg shells. They are very comfortable in eggs shells.
I wouldn't take off that helmet
Normal garden worms?
If you look closely, there are generally a few different types of worms in your garden.
It just depends on if you just want to farm them for bait, or if you have other goals, in which case some species are a little better than others for particular goals.

I suggest defining your goals, and doing some research on each individual specie, and finding one that will help you reach your goals in the most productive way.
