Answer:
My good Daddy used paper, kindling and the like.
I heard tell that the Indians would take the pieces
of Birch bark and leaves, strike a spark by hitting flint with steel and by Jove they invented fire.
kerosene
Fuels?
We always use newspaper and kindling.
Pine cones, pine needles, used paper egg cartons, saw dust, dry wood chips from the chopping block.
yes to all of the above. And when things really got bad .hunt down old furniture .disassemble the old outhouse & Barn.
In the old days it was newspapers, then kindling.
Today 'fatwood' works best. It's wood saturated with paraffin wax. It's also great for starting campfires. It even works in the rain!
Today I used a bunch of junk mail, some cardboard boxes, a couple old shingles and part of a pallet. Pretty much whatever's around that will burn quickly and put off enough heat to catch the logs on fire.
kerosene
I call it the black file box because all the junk mail goes into it. When I throw the iron skillet on top and cook breakfast, the excess bacon grease gets poured onto newspaper and tossed in too- a trick for only the fire-bugs to do. No need for a paper shredder around here in the winter months!
kindeling. The heart of the pine. The flammable resin is concentrated.
Pine needles, and lighter gel
