Research project questions - energy?

I'm just looking for ideas for a research project on the problem of what companies are doing to conserve our natural resources.

Answer:
The resource conservation question gets very interesting with companies that have a choice between using "virgin" feedstock or recycled material. For instance, a paper company can get its raw material from wood (chipped pine trees) or from recycled paper; an integrated aluminum company that makes cans can choose between bauxite ore as feedstock or recycled alumnium cans. The implications of such choices on energy consumption and resource conservation are enormous. For research, you could compare the actions, business models, and sustainability of companies that rely mostly on recycled feedstock vs virgin. For instance, Abitibi is a company in the paper recycling business, while Weyerheuser is a company that, while it recycles some, uses a lot of virgin pulp wood. In the aluminum industry, the energy required to refine ore into a can is 10-50? times greater than the energy required to recycle old cans into a new one. Aluminum smelting is so energy intensive that some people call aluminum "congealed electicity".

Good luck- this is actually important research that could affect consumer decisions or the decisions of investors looking to be more socially responsible.
you should fax that to the companies.
