Why would adaptation to the environment be important for sexual reproduction?

Answer:
A pretty good reason is the fact that asexual reproduction essentially creates clones of the parent. What this means is that if environmental conditions drastically change, a creature that is not well-adapted to the new environment will produce clones of itself that are also not well-adapted. The result is that the species will die out.

Sexual reproduction allows for genetic recombination, and the shuffling of genes is likely to create offspring that can survive in the new environment and continue the species.
The members of a particular species best suited to their environment are statistically more likely to create more offspring. When a species encounters a difficulty of some sort (change of weather pattern, being captured etc.) the first system to shut down is the reproductive system.
