How do you think we could get businesses to start recycling?
I mean it. Wherever I work, no one recycles. There is so much trash, so much waste. It's on such a larger scale than anyone's individual home. Think of it if just all the Starbucks's recycled--how much that would accomplish.
Answer:
I own a business and we recycle and compost. We are lucky to have a recyling plant in our town so we take all our cardboard and plastics there. My shop is a florist . We compost the old flowers and stems. We end up with 1 bag of garbage a week. I even have a man that ships things to people that picks up those styrofoam packing pieces and reuses them. Everyone can do it the just need motivation.
I think Starbuck recycles it coffee grides, but I would also like to know how we could get companies to recycle on a major side.
Need to pay for a convenient way to transport goods to recycling plants...for example volunteer or government funding of recycling trucks and trash sorting systems (IE plastic, cans, etc.).
If companies could get free "Recycling Trucks" taking out trash for them (and sorting it) just as easily as they can "Garbage Trucks" it would cost them neither time or money...I don't see why they would refuse.
Great idea. What about starting with local councils? Easily influenced by public opinion, massive wastage of all resources. Each time a new director is appointed they destroy reams of perfectly good new letter headed paper, instead of putting 'stickers' over the name. Get them to have different coloured bins for each waste and charge them if they do not recycle correctly or have too much excess wastage.
Our Local council pays £30,000 a year to get rid of their own green waste. Instead of allowing people to take it away for their own gardens.
What about Council Run refuse tips? When I was younger it was common for people to go and get a 'spare vacuum part', bike wheels, whatever free from the local refuse tip. They prevented that due to Health and Safety issues and spend our money to send it off (to China it's cheaper) to be processed. Madness. Sheer Madness.
The only way to do that is to make them richer then what they are . Do you think there in business for there health or is it the money ? Greed greed and more greed as long as the money is rolling in there not going to give a damn about the environment.
Make it financially attractive to the business. Maybe some type of tax deduction for a recycling program.
By posting an external cost tax.
But anyway, I think consuming less is more important than recycling. We shouldn't think that just because we are recycling, we can justify using more.
i agree.
businesses are in business to make money. it's what they do, not that they can't do it and be sensitive environmentally, socially, culturally. so we need to think on that level: how will a business be affected FINANCIALLY be recycling?
there are levels. our city provides a trash pickup discount for businesses that recycle. chah - ching.
customers expect to see and take advantage of a recycling system... cans and bottles, at the very least. if they don't see it they get a 'different' view of your business, some may vote with their feet, i would. chah - ching. speaking of trash, there is more room for the 'actual' trash in the dumpster if the 'recyclable' things aren't in there... less emptys needed, save on the disposal bill. chah - ching. use less packaging for your products, some customers appreciate the option of not using a sack or bringing their own: DON'T look at them like they're odd, THANK them and spread goodwill. they'll remember.
even with this info, some owners 'cannot be troubled' by setting up and managing a responsible recycling plan. they think it's too daunting, or will cost too much to implement. it's your job (and my job) as a customer or employee to point out that this is not necessarily the case: EVERYone can do SOMEthing. and all those little somethings can and do have a cumulative effect. it just takes someone to get it started sometimes.
You will need to show the business how recycling will save money or generate income. Otherwise you are out of luck.
