How can hotels become more environmentally friendly?
Answer:
Hotels could save a lot of money by simply changing all the light bulbs to low energy CFLs. This would not only save a lot of energy, but reduce the amount of maintenance required since they last much much longer.
Most of the luxury and even chain hotels use high flow water heads in the showers. They are really nice, but totally wasteful. About the towels, I'm wth you on that, but I don't think it is necessary to have seventy five towels in every bathroom and seventeen sheets on my bed. I also know that if I bring bottles of wine or liquor to the room with me that I can bet they are ending up in the maids cart and not the recycling bin afterwards. They also use very caustic cleaning chemicals to get the job done faster, I know it would be more expensive, but cleaning solutions like Simple Green are biodegradable and would make a huge difference!
There are many ways, but usually in the hotel business it's all about $$$, and whatever is best for the bottom line is what is used - I don't think the environment plays a huge role in that.
By installing low power consumption TVs instead of obsolete glass CRT models.
They could quit serving free hot breakfasts that keep the eggs and bacon hot from 7:00 to 10:00 and make everyone eat cold cereal.
Some hotels are green hotel members. Looking at their website will show some of what they say they do, but a lot of the responsibility is on the patrons.
