When I'm backpacking I often see where people have cut corners on the switchbacks. This usually means the park service has to bring out staff and volunteers to engineer a fix so they don't lose part of the trail.

It's a sign of laziness and I'd rather walk the extra steps, even with 30 pounds on my back, because it's good trail etiquette.
Cheating
Destruction of public property
Vandalism
Permaculture but your example is of a very bad shortcut.

Now a good shortcut would be not having to cut through the hedge at all to get to the shop because right outside your front door everything you need is growing. There are fruits, nuts, herbs and veg growing with very little effort from you. These 'shortcut' plants are self watering, perennials, self mulching and part of a holistic system Designed to make life easier, more pleasant and cheaper for you.

Now we are talking shortcuts.
