Could you kill an injured animal?

My cats brought a bird in. They didn't kill it and it managed to hide behind the fridge. I put it in the garden and kept the cats in but it's been there all day just hopping about. Think it's got an broken wing. I know it won't survive but I haven't got the heart to kill it. The vet would just put it down so what's the best thing to do?

Answer:
Best thing to do is get someone who isnt squeamish to wring its neck to end its suffering...I know its sounds harsh but i ha d the same problem 3 weeks ago and an elderly neighbiur of mine done it for me...Best to end its suffering..
Take it to the vets & let them put it down. They do that kind of thing all the time. Its either that or let your cats finish it off. Or put it outside & leaving it to die naturally but that may take days. Personally, I'd go with taking it to the Vets
Take it to the vet. You cant let it suffer. If you cant do it (and I completely understand - I couldnt either!) then the vets or rescue centre is the best place. They could fix it or let it die humanely.
i DEFINITELY agree with killing animals that are nearly dead-i hate to think of them being in pain!! even if someone goes to kill a spider/moth etc, if i see it moving about on the floor i make them kill it quick as i feel sorry for it!! take it to a professional x
We found a bird that could not fly and the vet said he would care for it at no charge
Contact the RSPCA they preserve wildlife.
take it to a vet.
let your cats kill it.
ahhhhhhhh just leave it alone o nature. its gunna die somehow let the cat kill it and make it not suffer
the best bet would be the vet, i admit if they was no other way and i was around a animal in pain i truly belived would die i would do mybest to end it's suffering as quick and painless as possible,

i would lose sleep and even cry about it, but tell myself i did it for a good reason

kind regards x kitti x
Take it to a vet or a wildlife center. They will do the right and humane thing for you. Don't let it go on for much longer, the poor bird is going to get killed by a predator or die a slow death.
I would take care of it till it would pass away. I wouldnt have the heart to kill it either.
Oh, I'm with you. I watched a chipmunk attack a little bird the other day. I tried to scare the chipmunk off after seeing that the birds wing was broken. It kept coming back. The chipmunk came back and finished his killing as we tried to keep it away from the screaming bird. The bird died and then the chipmunk took it away. While the bird was alive though I didn't know if it would be better off dead. I think that it would, but I don't have the heart to do it.
sometimes they can fix a broken wing..Are you sure it won´t survive? I wouldn´t kill it------nooooo...
grow a pair and put it out of it's misery! It was your cat that caused it so you deal with it or do you enjoy watching an animal suffer? I've put animals down that were suffering and any one that has a heart would do the same
PLEASE do not allow this poor creature to remain behind your refrigerator! If it's wing is indeed broken, it may be suffering and/or in pain. The best step to take is to enclose your cat(s) in another room, move the refrig with help if you need to, and try to throw a sheet over the bird, GENTLY. It may try to peck at you because it is, after all, wild and most likely in pain. BEFORE YOU DO THIS, try to call your state wildlife agency or a local vet who will be able to tell you if the bird can be saved (usually by a wildlife rehabilitator) or if they will need to humanely put it down. Please know that my spouse and I rescue animals so I have the utmost love and respect for the, and we also share our lives with cats. This is the absolute most humane thing to do if an animal is suffering.
The best thing to do is give it to the cat..an injured bird wont last long any way. Could I kill an injured animal? I once saw a wild rabbit that had myxomatosis..it's eyes were popping out of it's head and so I crushed it with my boot.
i once found an injured pigeon in my garden, it looked really poorly so i brought it inside in a box and gave it water and bread, a few hours later it was hopping about but couldn't fly. i phoned the RSPCA and they came to my house to collect the pigeon, they said it had injured its wing but they would help the pigeon and fix its wing...so i definately would either take it to the vet or phone the RSPCA..dont kill it
I grew up on a farm and "the men" often had the task of killing an animal that was only going to suffer until shock, predators, or starvation took its life "naturally" but quite painfully.

I personally feel it is much more humane to put down an animal that has no other hope of survival. But because of your reservations about doing it would recommend taking it to the vet. This way you can at least have some peace knowing it didn't suffer longer than it had to.

And you never know, there might be something that can be done for it besides putting it down, but only the vet would know that. If that is the case, it would definitely be better to get it to the vet right away.
NO,a few years ago iwas driving to the stables,(i used to do a bit of horse riding)when a rabbit ran out in front of my car, when i stopped and went back to see if it was still alive,it was but it's back legs were crushed,i could not kill it,soi went to a farm nearby and asked the man who answered the door if he would put the rabbit out of it's misery. He came back with me andquickly broke it's neck, said it would make a nicemeal.Iwas upset for quite a while after.
Been there done that.
i would say the best thing to do would be to put it out of its misery if its in pain. Taking it to the vet is a bit of a waste of time and money for a small wild animal.

in all honesty i dont think i could kill it myself. i might like to think i would set the cat on it to finish it off quickly but again i would have problems.

Therefore i would have to find someone less sensitive and with a spade to sort it out quickly
It could also be that the vet need not put it down and the wing could be mended so I would get in touch with the RSPCA in the first instance for advice, if they cant help they will tell you who will. I could not kill it either.
You should have made a choice immediately. If you interfere then it becomes your responsibility and you have to act. Any action would have been better than none: either killed it immediately or taken it to the vets if you thought it had a chance to recover. Fact of life cats kill and eat wildlife. If you can not accept this or take responsibility for it then you should not have cats.

I am assuming that you are a vegan, because if you are not prepared to kill, skin, gut and butcher meat yourself then perhaps you should be. Otherwise you are passing on your responsibility to other people.

If we want 'rights' to own pets then we should also take on the responsibility for them.
Hit it with a shovel.
