Is it more economical to use petrol or diesel automatic cars?

I use a Transporter automatic

Answer:
Diesel in the same type car has the better mileage.
It depends on the kind of fuel economy you get. I'm in the States - my car is a diesel and it gets 47 miles to the gallon on the highway. If it were the same car only gas (petrol) powered car, it would be getting about 27-30 miles to the gallon.
diesel generally provides more mpg, but it can cost more than petrol. also build costs & taxes differ in differnet places.

The cost to the health from deisels particulates is very significant, especially on main city routes.

A hybrid like the Prius avoids (recovers) many of the losses in an automatic transmission;
I don't think there are any diesel hybrids on the market yet because of they are harder to stop & restart - Toyota are working with Peugeot

electric vehicles are naturally "automatic" because of the superior torque characteristics - and much more economical than any fossil fuel http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com/...
