I'm stumped. Can anyone please tell me why....?

when I went to three different grocery markets yesterday and I pulled out my canvas bags to pack my groceries in, did everyone look at me like I was an alien? Like this was unusual, or abnormal! I find it sad that most people find this strange! Of course I will not change my positive steps because of others, but I hope that they catch on!

Answer:
THANKYOU!!

I had forgotten I was going to do that, too! Plastic bags are horribly evil. They will never break down and are not recycled in most places! I'm going to find some canvas bags today!
It is uncommon I suppose, but I think more were probably looking at you with not only suprise, but their own guilt?!

You keep on! :)
People are strange not you. They were rude to stare at you but consider the source.
Because it is a new thing now and people have not gotten used to it. Just think of the stares women received when they started wearing pants in public! Human nature my dear.

Ignore the "lookers" as you know you are in the right and doing your small part to help our planet.
you have the right to use whatever bags you want.it is good to be orignial.
They were staring because they thought you were a model modelling canvas tote bags ;-)

You know what's going to be hilarious ... clerks bagging up the groceries in plastic bags and then putting them all in the canvas bags. It's easy to defeat the purpose if you don't know what the purpose is to begin with.
It's just not a common thing yet (and I'd like to stress the "yet" part...). If you go into Whole Foods or PCC or such, there's much less of a commotion. The last time I was at the grocery near me, I handed my own canvas bag to the checker. I had a watermelon amongst my groceries and I told her I didn't need it bagged, she put it into 3 plastic bags and I told her I didn't need the bags and she shrugged at me and looked kind of confused. I said that the bags weren't only one-way and she could just take out the watermelon and use 3 bags for 3 bags of the next customer's groceries.

On the plus-side, there are some places where you actually get tiny incentives for bringing your own bags. Fred Meyer in the Pacific Northwest credited something like $0.05 for having your own bag, last I went there, but I haven't shopped there in some time. A little added incentive for everybody? It'd make sense for everybody to do that as the less bags we as consumers use, the less bags the retailers need to purchase to provide.
nothing is wrong with going to different supermarkets
It happens to me all the time ~ in fact, at my local store, they usually have to call a manager over to ring up the 5ยข a bag credit since no one knows how to do it. Amazing huh?
That's because you probably live in the mid-west or south. You wouldn't have these issues in most progressive parts of the country.
Well, it is strange and there for abnormal. You are still free to do as you want, however, so just ignore it.
