Is it a fox that is making strange noises in my London (UK) suburb? Is it a mating thing?

I live in Dulwich and I regularly hear foxes making really weird, and quite frankly harrowing, noises throughout the night. Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on? Are they partying, or do they just hang out in my garden and make really weird loud noises just to bug me?

Answer:
They are marking out their territory, calling for mates and communicating about trouble to each other. It's tough to tell what they are actually communicating without hearing it.
It might be deers.
