What is global warming and why is it such a big deal?

I have heard that it will affect future generations and it causes icebergs to melt making storms? I don't know...just wondering, especially since it's in politics and some people say there is no evidence, that it's not real?

Answer:
Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.

Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.

It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.

Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Proof that it's real here:

Global Warming is a myth!

The planet and the sun naturally warms and cools. These naturally occuring changes prompt changes in wind patterns and temperatures. They are cyclical and, again, perfectly natural.

What we do need to concentrate on is pollution, population control, reduction in natural resources used, etc...
turn your telly on and watch the news.
no tree, hot. ice melt, tsunami.
The Earth is protected by an ozone layer from the harmful UV rays of the Sun.
As we continue to pollute our Earth, our man-made gases and pollutants are deteriating the ozone layer causing more and more harmful rays to enter the Earth.
As the future comes, it will allow more heat to come into the Earth and will kill things (plants, humans) and most likely dry up lakes and streams.
It is already seen that glaciers are melting at a faster rate now than before because of the global warming.
Its a big deal cause it is harmful enough to end this whole world.

Its a Myth, It's a Crap? C'mon be serious it can crap you if you take it very easily.

If its not too much trouble to get the basic picture of global warming and its effects see the movie " The Inconvenient Truth".
well its affecting the cilmate change...well with politics they use as a chance to win more votes :-)
when the earth can't release the heat that it recieved from the sun. This heat causes: The meting of ice caps in the poles, the rising of sea levels and climatic changes that we experiance almost everyday.
Ever wonder who were communicating with seven times of extra ordinary power with earth, wind, fire, water and plagues in own backyards?

It's a big deal because human beings may be slowly destroying the Earth.

Many people deny this, but the scientific argument is clear.
In their denial or ignorance, people attack the scientific argument, but they are wrong. The vast majority of climate scientist agree that global warming is a very serous problem.
global warming is like a green house effect. which coz by co2.

why is it such a big deal ?
sure, its a big deal.
wanna prove ! fill your garage will a full co2 from your car. then u enter the room (close all windows and door), just for an hour.

u will feel the effect.
because it causes harricanes and tsunami
Global warming is really a big serious problem facing now. The global warming is caused because of over usage of automobiles which produce lot of carbon mono oxide. the carbon mono oxide makes holes in the ozone layer which the protective layer if our earth. because of the carbon mono oxide the temperature of the atmosphere is increasing. these all increase in temperature damages the ice of artic and antartic. because of this melting of ice our ocean water gets increasd and it will give more problem in future. even now scientists have found out that there is a hole in ozone layer in the artic ocean! because of global warming we will find the extreme type of climate i.e it will increase the temperature even during normal days.
so global warming is a real serious problem faced by humans now!

let us stop the usage of CFC gases more and use little amount of pertol by not wasting it just because you have money!
are u people retarted? global warming is when pollution from cars and smoke stacks and other things that run on electricity and gasoline (which is a limited source. thats why gas prices are way up. WE ARE RUNNING OUT.) when the smog (carbon dioxide aka emissions) get caught in the atmosphere, the sun can come in but not out.

That heats up the earth. when the earth heats up, the polar ice caps melt. polar ice caps hold 90% of the worlds supply of fresh water. When they melt, fresh water goes into the ocean and is diluted.

Also when the ICE (remember, ice is cold) melts into the ocean, the ocean cools down and the air is warm. (air doesnt heat up the ocean. light does) the ocean cooling down will stop the jet stream in the atlantic ocean. that will keep warm water and air from coming up and most of europe will go into a temporary ice age.

I USED TO THINK IT WAS A MYTH TOO! ITS NOT. LOOK UP " EXIT GLACIER ". ITS A GLACIER IN ALASKA THAT HAS MELTED BACK MILES SINCE 1961.
Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.
The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.
This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.
Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).
As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).
When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.
It's been happening for millions of years.
Humans did not cause it.
Humans cannot stop it.

What you are hearing in the 'media' is politics, NOT science.
You will get all the answers you need to your question from the answerers of this page, as well as by using yahoo search engines on the subject. What you will not get from any of these is the simple suggestion to counter the effects of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide: Photosynthesis is nature's way of recycling atmospheric carbon dioxide. Since we are producing more of this gas than nature can handle, why not assist nature in its task by engaging in MASSIVE AFFORESTATION PROJECTS all round the world. If we could turn many barren lands into tree-covered lots and currently depleted forests back to life, global warming may turn out to be no more than an "April fool's scare".
I don't believe it. I've seen alot of scams in my 56 years and this is just another scam. Al Gore has his oil stocks and is making money selling carbon offsets. Bobby Kennedy Jr doesn't want wind mills close to their property..People will buy into anything..I may get into selling carbon offsets..I own 5 acres so I'll charge people to plant trees on my property
i might suggest a few things.

-- what are other countries doing? eg, europe said that Saddam did not do 9/11, and had no WMDs. they were right. they are saying that global warming is a real problem.

-- which side of the argument is protecting it's profits? (or during Watergate, "Follow the money.") The energy industry profits are almost entirely dependent on burning coal and oil.

-- there is a junkscience.com website that claims global warming is not happening, or if it is, is not a problem, or if it is, is not caused by us, or if it is, we just cannot fix it. so what makes Steven J. Milloy an expert?

in the end, global warming is real.
it's a problem.
it will be a much larger problem for your children and grandchildren.
It is very real, but it shouldn't be as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

We are currently in a natural warming trend; there have been warming and cooling trends throughout the history of our planet. The hottest era our planet has seen occurred before human history began, and there's a good ways to go before it gets to that point again.

Global warming, if it happens to the projected extent, will affect future generations. But so do things like earthquakes- things we KNOW we can't influence. I wish people would realize that even though human-caused greenhouse gases do affect the rate of temperature change, they don't affect it nearly as much as is popularly believed.

So, my advice would be to do some research, look for as many scientific facts as you can find, and call it true or false for yourself. One way or another, no one knows for certain how long this warming trend will last, or how warm it will get. No one knows what, if anything, will happen as a result. Maybe it's the beginning of a new era in the earth's history, as happened millions of years ago with the extinction of dinosaurs. But most likely it'll be over and done with in a century or two, with no one the worse for wear.
The way of the Modern Human is unsustainable, we will eventually bury ourselves in toxic non-biodegradable garbage
