How can I make my shop more green/ethical/environment... friendly?
Answer:
Is your store in a commercial area with several other stores densely put together, not to far from lots of residences, like a traditional downtown, or is it in a place where people have to drive just to get to your store, then drive to do other shopping, like in most suburbs? Moving near to where people live, or near to where people shop anyway, like next to a supermarket or village, would be the best thing you could do if you're not there already.
Something unique and PR-wise could be to offer delivery in an eco-friendly vehicle. Delivery is important and actually energy-saving if you deliver once a day combining several trips; and, it helps the home-bound.
Whatever you do, keep in mind that the effect will be multiplied, since you will influence what other shopkeepers do by shifting the norm. Good for you.
You could use cloth bags instead of paper or plastic ones that way you can resuse them.
Offer a website so people don't have to drive to your store.
Try to get compatible businesses into the shops next to yours.
Donate a small percentage of your profits to local environmental groups.
You sound like you've explored this rather thoroughly. Good luck. Where's the shop, and is there a franchise in your future?
use only recycled plastic bags. if you can't get any use paper bags because it won't be as bad for them to go to the landfill because they decompose faster than plastic. also put solar panels on the roof or a wind turbine to power your building if you have enough money. sell products that don't have an unnecessary amount of packaging. put up posters that say save our planet or help stop global warming , that kind of thing. use an energy efficient security system too. sell products that are environmentally friendly such as ant spray made from plants, and other stuff. and if you have any electronics make sure they're energy star.
