Jackal in USA?

Is it possible to see a jackal in the US..
My family and I saw one drinking sewer water
one night as we were driving home.
We thought it was a dog until the headlights went on it and it was a Jackal. I never saw one here.

Answer:
Jackals are canids (species of dogs or foxes) that live in Africa, Asia, and Southeastern Europe. True jackals do not occur in North America.

North American canids include wolves, coyotes, foxes, and dogs.

If what you saw was really a jackal, it was probably an imported animal that escaped. More likely, it was a coyote or perhaps gray fox.
Are you sure it wasn't a small coyote or a fox? What was it that looked distinctively like a jackal?
