Do you mean TDS? total dissolved solids? That is a lab measurement based on an adequate sample (at least a liter) that is dried and the total salts left behind (not particulates...they are filtered out) are weighed. EC, electrical conductivity is a nice, easy surrogate measure for the more tedious TDS. It can be measured with a simple, hand held meter in the field. EC goes up with more TDS and there are standard relationships you can look up. They are also both rough surrogates for salinity.
