One great way is to use "Darken" it inverts the colors on a web page when you view sites so it is saving energy that your screen would have used. - http://lifehacker.com/software/lifehacke...
A great blog about going green is Treehugger - http://www.treehugger.com
bring your own mug or water bottle to starbucks, refuse to drink coffee in paper cups
First own as small a car as fits your needs, if you don't need a car at all don't drive one.
I then take a look at your energy bill if you have one. See which bills are highest (a clue that that is the easiest location to cut) if its you electricity bill find ways to cut electricity if its you gas bill find ways to cut gas etc.
Having plants doesn't mean you're "going green." The best first step is to switch all your lightbulbs to flourescent ones. Next would be to buy Low Flow shower heads and faucets. Energy Star appliances also save a lot of money too. And if you have a yard, you should let your clothes air dry outside instead of using a drier.
Here are some things I do:
1) Don't drive. Carpool or take public transportation whenever you can. If you must drive, see if any of your friends need to go to the same place you do; that way, you can help them be a little "greener," too!
2) Set your water heater to a lower temperature; use cold water whenever possible when doing laundry(most clothes will get clean in cold water, provided you separate the loads) and use the appropriate water level setting (if you have only three towels to wash, use the "mini" or "small" setting). As someone else noted, use an outdoor line to dry--as an added benefit, your clothes will smell sooooo good! :)
3) Don't use your AC unless the temperature is unbearable (say, 90's and up); a box fan uses about 1/40th the power of a window unit, and that plus appropriate clothing will keep you cool. When you must use it, set your thermostat to about 78 or 80. To help conserve even more, keep drapes and blinds closed in sunny windows; you can also put tin foil on the windows to reflect the sun's heat. In winter, set your furnace thermostat in the lower 60's, and if you plan to be gone for a long time, set it down to 55. Open blinds on sunny days to let the sun's heat in, and close them at night to hold warmth in. Which brings me to...
4) Use weather stripping and caulk to reduce energy leaks in your house. Put insulation in your walls and attic...just like people, houses lose most of their heat through their tops!
5) In the daytime, try to do as much of your daily routine by natural light as possible. A sunny window makes a great lamp! At night, never burn light you're not using--when you leave a room, switch off!
6)Use appliances until they completely wear out. Resist the sales pitch to buy a new one just because it's "the latest."
Hope these suggestions help. Good luck with "going green"!
